I thought that surely the auto-stop would have kicked in to prevent damage to the tape. Poetic license I guess

I think they confused the ability of new technology (DVD) with old tech (tape). I would bet they wrote the scene using DVDs and then someone pointed out that they didn't have recordable DVDs back then and it got only partially rewritten.... and of course, some players go into auto-play rather than auto-stop after a time period.

At least it was an 8mm and not a BetaMovie.

Was it actually an 8mm?  I assumed VHS-C.

The cassette looked a little too thin to be VHS-C (we had a VHS-C video camera once)

The "C" cassette only has one reel opening on the bottom also.
I service Camcorders so I see them on a daily basis.
IIRC, Max Headroom's futuristic gun-shaped camera also contained an 8mm cassette.

As if it really matters, it looked more like a mini-DV tape.....

OK, now you made me get my copy back out. It is definitely an 8mm tape.
Since the distance from the tip of his finger to the second joint is about 2 inches and his finger covers about half the length of the cassette then that makes the length of the tape just under 4 inches which matches the length of an 8mm tape - 3 3/4 inches.

I will have to do some research but the shape of the clear plastic opening over the reels is specific to each brand and I should be able to pin down the exact brand of cassette eventually.

edit: From the shape of the "window" on the tape, I am pretty sure that it is a TDK brand cassette.

I am missing Monk already. So last week, we took out some episodes from prior seasons. One we watched was Mr. Monk and the Secret Santa (I never tire of that one). We're going to watch the other 'Santa' episodes as well very soon. I like how they made various Christmas (and other holiday) episodes along the way.

Mr. Monk and the Secret Santa opens wonderfully (my favorite song by Brenda Lee), has the usual Disher hysterics, this time singing (and he ain't half bad), and concludes with one of the most poignant moments for me in the series. If you watch the segment when Disher begins to harmonize with Stottlemeyer, some of the cast behind Monk and Natalie are (I think) unable to remain in character, with some of them laughing at what they're seeing / hearing of the Dishman.

BTW, at the beginning of the tune sung by Stottlemeyer (O Holy Night), did anyone catch how the camera pans in front of a frozen-like Monk, showing him turned away from everyone else? I wonder why he was directed to do that at that point.  It's kind of deliberate, and IMO somewhat unusual.

Nitpick:  When they were watching the show at Perkin's place, the image filled the entire 16:9 screen and everything appeard in normal proportions.  The only way that could happen if the episodes had been remastered in widescreen from the original film a la Hogan's Heroes on UHD.  Yet when Natalie and Monk watch the discs on his 4:3 TV, the show also fills the screen and is in normal proportions when it should be letterboxed.  Obviously impossible.  And yes, I know that noticing this is almost as geeky as knowing that Christine Baranski once did a gues shot on The Brady Bunch,.

Joe,

Some additional food for thought.  My five-year old loves the slumber party episode of The Brady Bunch (The Slumber Caper, from season two).  Watching it recently, I decided to check up on something.  And guess what?  Baranski has said (at least in this interview) that she was never on The Brady Bunch.

Of course, the above Blog could be erroneous.  It brings to mind, though, how we were taught in library school to find five (5) sources that agreed with one another before we accepted a reference as being corroborated.
