dvd to receiver problem

I recently purchased a Samsung plasma (50"). I have an onkyo home theater in a box with an old dvd player.

Ill give you a rundown on what I have done so far:

cable box to onkyo (in) onkyo (out) to samsung tv (in). No problems. great picture.

dvd player to onkyo (in) big problems ~ no signal displayed on the samsung. This is where I need help. What am i doing wrong? I really want to watch a movie on my new TV, but cant.

I did all of this with component cable and coax for the dvd audio (which is just fine).
