WHV Press Release: The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary UCE (DVD/Blu-ray) - Page 7

Amazon UK has a listing up for TWoO: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002EDTTJY
Looks like a 3 disc version but extras are in PAL possibly?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
The extras would only be in PAL if they are on a DVD. If they're on a BD they will be NTSC.
It's likely that the extras will be NTSC but not guaranteed; Life on Mars, for example, has PAL extras on a Blu-ray disc.
To my knowledge Warner has never put PAL extras on any of their BDs.
I'm pretty sure the extras will be in high definition without any PAL issues.
Also, that Amazon price is less than $26 plus shipping.
Am I safe to assume that this is region free. If so I'll gladly pre-order from Amazom UK & cancel my pre-order with WB.
This could very well be the way to go...

I would urge everyone to but the region free import version if you want your voice to
be heard about Warner releasing these ultra-expensive releases as our only purchase
choice.

I'll definitely get the UK set, then. That's what I did with Woodstock. Got it for a great price, without all the extra kick-knacks and as it turned out it also contained all the bonus performances and extra featurettes from both the Amazon.com and well as the Target exclusive editions.

It would be $27.45 including shipping to the US.

Do they have a Blu-ray of CASABLANCA similarly priced?

This would definitely play in a US (Sony) BD player?

$32.45 total (current conversion rates and cheapest shipping method) to be precise.

I think I'll just hold off for now.  I'd rather wait to have confirmation of non-PAL extras, even then I might not bite as it's more than I'd like to spend on a single film.  I'm sure the price will go down after it's been out a while and I'm in no rush anymore.

Besides, I don't feel overly inclined these days to go out of my way to support Warner in any shape or form.

I very much appreciate the UK find!  No question this is the way to go if the extras are NTSC.

I came up with $27.45. They subtract the VAT when you order from overseas.

Of course, the price you pay will be based on the exchange rate at the time they're about to ship.

I didn't include VAT but I did include the shipping cost.  $32.45 total

I always factor in shipping when determining a total cost.

Well, that's more affordable than our only BR option is here in the states.

Yes. All of Warner's discs are Region Free.

Yeah it looks like I'm glad that I got the HD-DVD version of Casablanca.

So do I. I ordered it and the price came to 13.73 GBP (w/o the VAT) + 3.08 GBP for "postage and packing" for a total cost of 16.81 GBP, which dollars2pounds.com converted to $27.45.

and I used the current price at AmazonUK which as of yesterday was 16.79 GBP (w/o VAT) + 3.08 GBP for shipping for a total cost of 19.87 GBP converted at xe.com comes to $32.45 total.

FWIW  it looks like it's going for 1 GBP less today at 15.79

BTW Is this back and forth really necessary?  What are you trying to prove?

Not to hijack this thread, but is www.amazon.co.uk/Woodstock-Blu-ray-Jimi-Hendrix/dp/B001V7P2MM/ref=sr_1_1 that the one you're referring to, Christian? Is it region-free?

Yes, Scott, that's the one and it's 100% region free.
If the extras on the UK disc are in standard definition, they'll be in PAL.

I think it's unlikely that all the bonus features will be in HD - some of the documentaries being recycled, for example, are more than a decade old. Of course, if you have the existing R1 DVD, you'll have them on that.
But won't all the discs in this set be blu-ray discs?  That would render the whole PAL issue moot.

Why are people thinking the supplemental discs wouldn't be BDs?

You seem to think that anything on BR must be in high def, and that's not the case.  Material on BR can also be encoded in NTSC or PAL.

That WAS my understanding.  I thought Blu-ray eliminated PAL/NTSC differences and that, except for regional coding, everything was the same.

Wrong, huh?  Wouldn't be the first time for me.  But I thought that's what I had read right here on the HTF.  Maybe I'm just "misremembering."    Or...more likely...simply getting it wrong.
