Reviews on the Apple site are pretty encouraging.  I may be going to one of the local Apple stores tonight, if I do I may pick one up

If anyone has picked this up yet, can you let me know if the kit is easily transferrable between vehicles?  I travel every week and I'm definitely interested in this if I can use it in rental cars for a few days at a time.

Yes if you use the suction cup on the windshield, it is easily movable from car to car.  They also do provide a disk that you can attach to your dashboard for the suction cup to stick to, but you can only do it once, and I have no idea how long it will stay put or how hard it will be to remove if you buy a new vehicle.  You can, of course, remove the suction cup from this disk and continue to bring it to other cars like rentals any time you want, but you will need to attach again to their windshield...  I'll try to post pictures this week.

Anyway, I'm not sure how I really want to proceed in setting this up in my own vehicle.  What i thought it would have is Bluetooth from the dock to my CAR, not from the dock to my Phone.  I am yet to explain this, really.  If it did that I should be able to stereo A2DP from the Dock to the car totally wireless, but it won't do that, which I considere totally dumb.  I still have yet to even figure out why it has a bluetooth connection between the phone and the dock.  This makes no sense to me, it should just use audio out over the dock connector to the stereo out of the dock itself.  UNLESS it's optional and only for people who don't have in car bluetooth already...  For folks like me who have such tech, adding this as a requirement for use would be especially problematic.  I want to continue using my in car bluetooth for calls so that it 'dims' the stereo no matter what I am listening to.  My car also does not have a free stereo in jack, which means that the audio out of this dock remains useless.

The problem is I have not been able to get the TomTom App on it yet cause that will require me to free up 1.5+ gigs on the phone and I'm not yet ready to cull my playlists down that much.  More when I have done so.  Until the software is installed it apparently won't keep the phone lit up either, it continues to fade and then go to power save after however long you have it defaulted to.  I assume that this is fixed with the TomTom software, but I can't be certain until I install that.  If that DOESN'T work the way I'm expecting then this will be a real big failure of the dock itself.

I've got a $50 iTunes GC from Xmas, set aside for iPhone apps this summer :) GPS could be a good use for it.

$50?  You're going to need a bigger boat =)

It's the nest egg, the starting point, a bite off the total appstore bill  And I'll get a few bucks when I eBay my current GPS.

I don't understand why the $120 TomTom car mount costs $170 at Amazon.

Me either, I finally gave in and paid full retail at the local apple store, and you KNOW how much I hate paying retail!

TomTom 1.3 is now available for download, all 1.3GB of it!

Also, I found a neat trick.  In a pinch you can remove the car power cable and connect the dock to a standard USB cable, nice if you forget your dock cable like I did on my last trip!

If you use the TomTom app, you MUST get today's update, it crashes constantly on iOS4.  Has sucked dealing with that for the last month, you guys are lucky they got it out so fast cause it was a PITA.

I am very much intrigued by how well the iPhone 4 fits into my TomTom dock.  If it doesn't fit, as I expect, that will be a waste of $125 cabling.  Will have to sell that off and wait for the refresh.

Looking forward to seeing iOS4-able GPS apps, and seeing if there's one that can replace my standalone Garmin.

Maybe you can do a mini-review on the Tom Tom app?

The good news:  iPhone 4 fits just great in the original TomTom iPhone dock.

The bad news:  Apparently iPhone 4 sips 10 volts and the old dock only provides 5 so it won't charge the new revs.

Be aware that the link engadget uses is for the UK, which doesnt go live for a day or two.  US one gtg now:

I'm confused. The car adapter isn't free but the adapter to the adapter is free?

Engadget doesn't seem to care for tom-tom, but they don't say what's better?

Just bought the TomTom software over the weekend when they dropped the price. This doesn't seem to solve the problem of not enough voltage though. Does the dock make that big a difference? I've had pretty good reception. Does the speaker make it that much louder? Not sure why I'm asking anyhow. It's illegal to windshield mount devices in Illinois. I really want to know when version 1.5 of the TomTom software is coming out with the retina display support and the slick "navigate to photo" feature.

Any word of a new TomTom mount for the iPhone 4? I really want to buy a pair of mounts and GPS software our two iPhones. But to my disappointment, GPS software and hardware for the iPhone doesn't look nearly as robust as I expected.

The car charger is like $130.  Expensive but worth it for the better GPS chip in it which does help.  The speaker is terrible and the bluetooth in it is dumb.

They do list their recommended alternatives:

What makes you think it doesn't fix the voltage?  It looks like that insert has some jumpers in it, not that it's just changing the shape.

Thanks. Engadget's review of Navigon is a year old and certainly out of date. But that got me to searching for TomTom reviews and I'm finding various recent blurbs and reviews. Most reviewers don't seem to have a clue about how to talk about GPS software, but in aggregate I think I can get a fair sense of TomTom's current software.

How do you like the latest version, with multitasking, Sam? And can you buy TomTom voice packs for it :)

I don't know. The drawings I looked at appeared to be nothing more than a piece of plastic with some adhesive. I assume it's just TomTom's attempt at a more elegant solution than this.

I havent used it since I got my iPhone 4.  Actually Multitasking with it is a problem.  When battery charged and GPS running it gets fairly hot.  Without the charging it eats battery like crazy.  I'm looking forward to the fixed dock to appraise if the heat will be an issue.
