Hit me on my 3GS

This is the 3rd time I will be posting the video but the first time it will actually be true.

YouTube - Hit Me On My iPhone

Man, look how far we have come since then.

Anyway, I will be out of town next week so I'm going to do the 'order online route' tonight. I wonder how that works with me swapping over from Verizon tho. Any insights on that?

Thank God we have the Internet and people with lots of time on
their hands.

That video was extremely well done.

Almost ON like DONKEY KONG...wouldn't you say, Sam?

I'm IN! I signed up to have my number come with me from Verizon, this should be interesting. I did the online sale with overnight shipping. I wonder, will they transfer my number before shipping it to me or am I going to have to take it to an Apple store anyway to have it turned on. If that's the case, I'm going to be pissed about wasting the $16 =) What will make it even more interesting is that I'm on travel to Texas next week, if it ships early and they have swapped my number before I'm ready, the phone could be at my home before I am!

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

Same phone as me, buddy. I paid $200 more but you may be
facing the same situation next year.

My only fear at this point is that there are strong indications
Verizon will have the iPhone next year. All of us with a 2-year
contract are either going to have to pay $175 extra to break off
from AT&T or wait an additional year to take advantage of the iPhone
under Verizon which will most likely be a 4G phone.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

We'll blow that bridge up when we come to it. I really do need the data plan so it was either go whole hog on the iPhone or wait for the updated Touches to come out and get a MiFi and stick with Verizon. The iPhone won out.

I'm sure MMS and Tethering will happen down the line but I figured they aren't deal breakers for me. We'll see how much I hate AT&T by the end of the contract and if there is an incentive to back to Verizon I'll give that strong consideration when the time comes.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

Surprisingly, I don't dislike AT&T.

Have really had no major problems with them.

However, 4G is a huge factor for the future of mobile phones. If I
understand correctly, AT&T is not going to have it for the next two
years while Verizon is just starting to roll it out.

The BIG plus for AT&T is that I go with the basic voice plan. Any
unused minutes roll over to the next month (and so on). I have a
few thousand minutes I have accumulated that I can easily use if
I have a busy month of chatting. No need to go with a more
expensive plan to get extra minutes I may never use.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

The thing about 4G is that the LTE rollout will take time, for Verizon included before it covers their full territory. Thus a 4G iPhone has to be backwards compatible -- for AT&T, no problem -- you keep the GSM radio, which you have to, no matter what. For Verizon -- does that mean Apple will build a CDMA phone? What happens when you travel in Europe -- your phone stops working? Or does Apple manage to stick LTE, CDMA and GSM radios in there without making it as thick as a brick or having a battery that lasts 3 hours?

Bottom line, it is not a given that we get a Verizon 4G phone before a AT&T 4G phone.

Lastly, if AT&T really manages to reliably provide their currently advertised 3G speeds -- 7.2mbps. which is almost FIVE times as fast as my Verizon DSL at home, nobody will care all that much about 4G. Now, I'm not suggesting that AT&T will succeed. But slowness in 4G rollout is not the problem -- fulfilling their 3G promises is.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

OK, talk to me about cases. With my iTouch I didnt care that the metal got scratched almost immediately despite being kept in a leather case, but with the iPhone I am going to want a decent guardian around this guy. I'm not a big fan of the neoprene sleeves and not sure how good those hard plastic ones are. I was looking at the incase clear slider and the Agent 18 Clear. Also, I hate belt clips, and keep my current razor in my pocket, I don't think I want to do that or can get away with it anyway on the iP, so that might be a further consideration. Any advice?

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

I never understood cases. I use one for my hard drive based iPod, because I'm afraid of killing the disk by dropping it. The iPhone I have been using for two years without a case -- no problem. The glass is still pristine*, there are a few small scratches on the back, not noticeable by me unless I look for them. One tiny dent. I've dropped my iPhone on the sidewalk multiple times. Maybe I'm just lucky. But I certainly would not have put up with inconvenience and ugliness of a case to spare it the little damage it has.

* I know a couple of people whose glass got broken -- IIRC small children throwing the phone were involved.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

Maybe I'm just too used to having the pristine smooth as glass metal scratched up the day i buy it on my ipods and that doesnt happen with the iPhones. Will evaluate as time goes by then.

OK, next question, Ring Tones. I'll be damned if I will pay apple to let me cut up songs i already own to turn them into ringtones. How hard is it to get around the paywall?

Apple officially supports creating your own ringtones using Garage Band. It is an easy and seamless process. Just import any AAC (DRM free of course, not sure about other formats) song from iTunes, edit to produce an up to 30 second long ringtone, and send back to iTunes.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

Sounds like a plan, thanks!

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

You can use Garage Band to cut up pretty much any song off of CD for use as a ringtone, if you take the intermediate step of ripping it into iTunes first. Garage band is pretty easy to use and the ringtone export capability was added in the iLife '08 version.

On the subject of cases, I've never used one with my 1st gen iPhone and haven't had any issues, but I'll probably get one for the 3GS. I've had too many friends that have had their glass break. I keep my phone in the pocket so it can't be anything too big. Since the form factor is smaller than the 1st gen, I think I'll be able to find something I like. I was looking at my dad's 3G that he has in a neoprene case. It fit in my pocket about as well as my phone does now. I like the idea of the neoprene because it should lessen the sudden impact if the phone is dropped on one of its corners. Most the the glass breaks that I've been told about or have seen happened when the phone landed on one of the bottom corners and not direct screen impacts. The exception in my circle of friends is the one who shut it in his car door.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

im on alltel so no iphone love for me, but i do have last years touch and what excites me most on the new 3gs is the hardware upgrades. wow.

the old phone ran at 412mhz and the new one is 600, old had 128 megs of ram, new one has 256, the on board cache is doubled and it has a dedicated gpu. When they say 2x faster they aren't kidding.

Yeah, should be interesting to see if games come out that are 3GS only. There's a flood of stories on Techmeme speculating about that now.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

Just read an article on CRAVE where a developer is saying,
"3G S graphics will be SOOO much better than PSP's."

The article goes on to indicate the developer said the iPhone
3G S's support for OpenGL ES 2.0 will push the machine's 3D
graphics capabilities beyond that of the PSP.

If you don't want a case but still want protection try:

Awesome stuff. I've used it on all of my ipods.

I had one of those for my PSP when it first came out and could never get all the bubbles out behind it, have they improved the application process where even a fat fingered guy like me will be able to put it on easily?

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I'm thinking that I'll cover the back of my 3GS with invisible shield and see how the screen does sans protector. I have the Power Support Anti-Glare Film Set for iPhone - Apple Store (U.S.) on my ipod touch screen and I really like it mostly because is resists finger prints. I'm curious as to how Apple's new coating will compare.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

So is/has anyone been to an Apple Store and do they have separate lines for people with reservations? There were pictures of lines around the block at the NYC Apple Stores -- so don't know if my reservation is worth anything waiting wise. Looks like I'll take my chances after work.

Re: Hit me on my 3GS

I don't understand the line waiting.

If you ordered it from Apple you get it today. No extra charge.

Now, mind you, if that option were not available (as was the
case with the 3G last year) I would be on that line at this very moment.
