Home Theater Forum 2.0 Has Arrived! - Page 5

For those who haven't read it...HERE is a post from forum owner Ron Epstein explaining "why the change."

Marianne:  I already let them know they need to activate the code so we can do smilies on-the-fly.  I'm sure it's on their list.

It's definitely on the list.

I'd love to get your insight on how you'd like this to work ideally.  Are there certain keyboard short cuts you'd like to use to insert smilies, etc?  Let me know what your ideal "work flow" would be in terms of adding smilies/stars/etc and I'll talk to our engineering team to see what's possible.

Thanks!

I just made a huge post and then hit the clear button, what the bleep is that down there for, do we really

I huge thumbs down for me so far.
the color is hidious, there is no "hi-light spell check" that I can see.
why is the entire forum only on the left side of my already measly 13"  screen.

will i have to check the subscribe box down there for every topic i post in or will
I be able to set it and forget it.

I need to find those darn directions, where did i put that thing.......

I think the most intuitive method would be a hybrid method; clicking on the thumbnails to add them in the WYSIWYG mode, and the markup tags from the old forum for the "Source" mode; ie. = ; :tu:=; etc.

Ooff, it would definitely be frustrating to get subscribed to every single thread you post in.  It's also frustrating to have to uncheck that box!  To set your default so that the "Subscribe" check box on replies and reviews is automatically UNCHECKED...here is the full tutorial with screenshots in the Subscription Tutorial.

Here's the short version....
  1. Navigate to your user profile (click the My Profile tab at the top)
  2. From here, you'll see the "Edit Account Details" button.
  3. About half way down in the Account Details, you'll see a section for Email Preferences.  The last checkbox in that series of three is for that Subscribe box.  Uncheck it.
  4. Click save.

Oops!  My apologies I didn't introduce myself before I posted in this thread originally.

My name is Cristina Foung.  I'm part of the Huddler.com team, now partnering with Home Theater Forum.  Along with the HTF admins, I'm here to help answer questions.  I'm also here to make sure our computer engineers have an updated list of any feature requests and bugs that come up, etc.  Another support person you'll see around the forums is Dan Gill

While I agree this is definitely irritating since it's the first button you see, I was able to reverse the clear by hitting Ctrl+Z quick.

Did I take the Red pill or Blue pill? I always forget which is which.

I'm looking at the new HTF for the first time. The stalking side bar is freaking me out, but I saw the tip on to stake it down, if I can't adjust. The text contrast is lower than I care for; dark gray text on light gray backgrounds isn't preferable.

I immediately liked the new front page. I may actually use that (I avoided the previous main page at all costs). The page layout seems cleaned up, de-cluttered, which I like.

This is my first post to the new system. Here's hoping... :)

[EDIT] No emoticon support. That's unfortunate. My avatar is gone. I needed a new one anyway.

Stins, my avatar is no big deal.  It was just a comment.  I can take care of that on my own.

Jim_C, apologies about your avatar.  We're looking into it.

Remember to post to that main feedback thread I linked to guys if you want real high visibility on your suggestions...

Again.  This is my first time back to the HTF since 5pm.  There have been 13 new posts to this thread since then...but the "Stuff You Care About" section on my home page told me there were two new posts to this thread.    This is the kind of stuff that REALLY bugs me.  This makes me think that I might be missing posts in threads to which I am subscribed.

The aesthetic stuff is something I figure will be changed or will become commonplace to me over time...but functionality is job #1.  I had the same above issue in the "Observations" thread.

Dave:  I figure the date-of-birth field is to develop a birthday list similar to what was in the old software.  But that is pure speculation on my part.

I wouldn't want to be notified for every thread I posted in, but I did like the way it worked under the old system where I could look at my control panel and see every thread that had a new post in it.  I guess this meant I was subscribed to all of those threads, but the email notification was independent of this.  Even though I don't want emails for most threads, I tend to always follow the threads that I post in.  I don't see a way to easily do this.

Mike I was referring o the "Sex - Not Given". Does this mean given to me, or given from me? Is it referring to HTF members only or just generally speaking?

By the way spell check needs a "add to dictionary" option. It sees the "HTF" as a mis-spelled word

I used to love the "last page" link on forums so I could jump easily.  I also hate how the post are so small on the monitor.  Can't the advertisements be in the middle at the top, at least that way when we scroll down the post takes up the entire screen.  Advertisements on the side does seem to accomplish anything but scrunching the messages.

New forum looks professional.  It will take some getting used to but I like it.
I have yet to find anything about this new software that was better then the old. After a day with this, I am not a fan of it at all. There's nothing I can find that makes this better then the old. Why ads on a side bar? Can we expand the threads to fill the screen? Can we change colors of the threads, these are too bland and makes it more difficult to read?

Wow.  I almost lost this request...there've been so many different things going on here!

The way this used to work was--as you'd be typing your text into the box you could just add a :D on the fly after a particular point and once you pushed "Post" (which I happen to like better than "submit") it would then show up in the post as .

Let's see how many of thse I can remember:

:) =

:D =

:( =

;) =

:patriot: =

 =

 = (this one always confused me because it was :b: before the last software change and I still had trouble remembering which one is current!)

 =

 =

 =

 =

:chatter:   (I think)

:f =

:star: =

:td: =

:tu: =

 =

:jawdrop: =

I wish I could remember more...such as   but I just don't recall.

BTW, in the smilie pop-up, this guy is included twice:    I really like one of the animated ones in the sandbox which seemed like "I did it!  **Hint, hint**

Is there a setting that will make the New Posts view automatically update as new posts arrive on the HTF?   Thanks.

I'm really missing the "last post/page" option of the threads.

Also is there some kind of user control panel that I'm missing?  Something like where you set "Display posts only from the last day", etc?

Jeff:  The old UserCP did a lot of different things.  If you want to track new posts in threads you are subscribed-to...check out the "HOME" tab at the very top of every forum page.

But you also need to make sure you have adjusted your subscription settings to be sure you set them that you are subscribed to every thread you make a post in.

Hope that helps.  I was a big user of the UserCP and find the "Home" page very useful in that regard.

Big Trouble in Little China

Testing. Testing. My favourite function on the new forum, the ability to post pictures from your desktop. Not sure if there's a limit to how many one can post. But I can still use Photobucket to link to I suppose. I must have posted about 10,000 pictures on the old forum, many of which are still around.

I see the Search This Thread facility is not on here, it was on the top corner of each page and would quickly allow you to zero in to something someone said in a large thread. I'll miss that.
