Upgraded my 3G to 3.0 GM last night...no comment on whether I'm in the dev program. Everything running smoothly so far.

No Dave, it's all a guessing game. Nehalem mobile was supposed to be Q3 or Q4 2009 (and Apple usually gets theirs a bit early from Intel) but word is now that Nehalem mobile will be more likely in Q1 2010. According to Macrumors the Macbook Pros and iMacs [both of which will likely use Nehalem mobile] average about 200-220 days between refreshes. That's about seven months. Which would take us to...Q1 2010. The dates dovetail nicely, I think. So the answer is: if you can wait seven months, go for it. Otherwise, unleash the hounds and enjoy your new Mac sooner rather than later!

Thanks. I can buy this July and rest at ease that nothing huge will happen three months later.

and back to the pricing/full box option. Im' guessing there will be retail boxes that are snow leopard, but probably have leopard and snow in the same box or bundled together for 129. A also assume that the snow leopard is a upgrade disk, not a full install, or at least runs a os checker at some point.

i was wrong on this, just found this: looks like if your not on leopard already you get screwed and have to buy the big box with everything in it. Sounds like it would be better to find a box leopard now if your on a intel and dont have it yet.

Haha, don't hold that over my head, though! I have zero insider information and iMacs/MBPs have been revised in Sept-Oct before! But if I remember correctly most of those were minor speedbumps (with the major revs coming earlier in the year) and the move to Nehalem would, to me, signify a major rev and not just a speedbump.

BD will surely survive as a videophile niche, but I am not betting on it beating out downloads as the mainstream video format of the future.

I'm saying DVD is a bigger threat to their download services and they don't seem worried or likely to start cutting back on support.

You can't take away features you already provide.

Anyway Apple looks at the future, not present. That's why so many competitors get dumfounded when they copy the current Apple hot stuff, then Apple releases something new and they are left holding their dicks. See: Zune copies iPod, Apple releases iPhone/iPod Touch Microsoft has no answer. By the time the Zune iPod Touch copy finally ships at the end of 2009, Apple will have not just moved the goalposts but changed the game. (See $99 iPhone, iTablet, etc.)

So, Apple is paying no attention to SD -- they are only concerned with HD and are betting that downloads will eventually surpass physical media. Thus they don't want to help mainstream BD in any way (being added to a Mac is a pretty huge boost -- that's how I ended up being a DVD early adopter without ever having owned a TV in my life.)

Now that is awesome---if it works well. Oil on the screen is a big nuisance and it has not been easy to clean.

What? Now you tell me!

No worries. If there were strong rumors about an Fall release, I'd consider holding off. But my wife needs a new computer and I've postponed it several months already waiting on 10.6 news. We'll do the upgrade in-between projects. Going to be fun

As someone who is prone to having sweaty hands, this is actually a very big selling point.

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

I've been wondering about the safety or usability of these hyper-integrated devices i.e the iPhone.

While driving, how do you manage a GPS / iPod / Phone? If the phone rings, does it intrude on the GPS? How do you quickly reduce the music volume to hear the GPS giving critical directions? How do you switch to a new PodCast without interrupting the GPS?

This isn't a complaint about the iPhone per se. I'm just wondering if we have an interface good enough for this level of integrated device?

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

with all the apps, when you are in one and the phone call comes in
the app goes away to the call.
If you ignore the call or hit the side button it goes right back to the still
running app.
I suppose the gps will do the same.

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

I've also been wondering about the safety of the new "find me" and "wipe stolen iPhone" features. Is there any realistic chance these could be hacked, so that black-hats could track individuals by their iPhone; or remotely wipe others' iPhones?

These seem like great features; I hope they are bulletproof to outside actors.

Guess one shouldn't let their spouse/significant other have access to their mobile-me account. Or let their computer at home do an automatic log-in to mobile me. (You know...that little check box that says keep me logged in for 2 weeks).

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

I don't see a problem with letting Mobile Me remembering the login as long as people have separate user accounts on the Mac. I never have understood families where the husband, wife and two kids all share a single account. Dumb.

Michael,

Oh, it happens!

I got a hell of a talkin' to from the wife of a husband who is
a business associate of mine and did not like the "tone" of the
emails that I was writing to him.

I was shocked to find that some people let others in their family
have access to their email --- especially private business email.

I'm thinking more about me being able to use my iPhone and, with some tool, locate your phone by GPS or execute a remote wipe on Ron's phone.

Of course "social engineering" is even more dangerous: someone's kids hit the "remote erase" button by mistake while dad's out of town on business.

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

I'm ogling AT&T's online plan configurator last night (very dangerous...) but you can't create a family plan with two iPhones online. Most of the world, it seems, would get a family plan with an iPhone and a Razr. Weirdo that I am, I'd get two iPhones. So I can't really figure out the cost of iPhones for my wife and me.

So...is the iPhone data plan, at $30/mo, added for each iPhone in a family plan? Or is there family plan discount for multiple data plans?

I am a few short weeks away from purchasing the MBP 15" and
was surprised to read this little ditty...

Quote:
The new battery in the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros is nonremovable

I realize these new batteries are rated for 1,000 charges and 5 years
of use, but I like the idea of having a spare battery on long flights so
that I can use my laptop continually. Nor particularly happy about
this revelation.

So long as someone comes up with an external battery, (which for sure they will, just like they did with the iPhone), it is a win-win situation -- you have a longer lasting internal battery, a stronger, thinner, lighter machine, and still can get an external for that 3rd inflight movie...

I'd happily trade my unibody MacBook Pro with removable battery for one of the new ones -- I'd rather my ONE battery last longer.

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

There are already third party external battery packs for the MacBook Pro. I just saw a review for one the other day.

And you CAN replace the internal batteries, at an Apple Store for $129, the box doesn't become a brick. It's not user swappable however.

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

Check out iFixit's teardown of the new 13" MBP - the battery doesn't seem to impede the removal/replacement of the HD or RAM. I'm going to assume, being the smallest MBP, if the 13" doesn't impede it, neither the 15" or 17" will. It's not 100% clear if you have to remove the battery or not in order to get to the HD or RAM, but both are visible without the removal of the battery. I think iFixit just removed the battery in the teardown to show that it can be removed.

Re: WWDC Live Discussion Thread: All today's BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS are HERE!

I do think there's a lot of confusion about "nonremovable" "nonreplaceable" etc. in regards to the battery on the new MBPs.

Ron is right in the sense that with a new MBP you can no longer simply buy a spare battery like the old models, charge both (or three if you've got the $$$) and get triple battery life by swapping them out while on a long business trip or flight. Now, if one wants to do that, they will have to buy an external power source like the one Michael K Sr linked to.

The new MBP batteries are removable and replaceable, though, in the sense that if you open up the bottom of the MBP as shown in iFixit's guide, it can be removed and replaced. However indications seem to be that Apple will not be selling these individually packaged, like older MBP batteries, so unless you happen to have a source for the batteries, only Apple will be able to replace your battery.
