I liked Nemesis too.

Better put up the shutters on my house now.

Also liked a lot of the cut scenes from Nemesis.

I'm a fan of Nemesis as well. Was it the perfect TNG film? No. But it had one of the better space battles I had seen, it was fun to see the characters again, and it was certainly leaps and bounds better than Insurrection.

Re: New Star Trek TOS sets, TNG films and Star Trek 2009 rumoured dates

Nemesis was not a total disaster and the deleted scenes show it was misdirected and too much behind the scenes power was given to Stewart & Spiner which IMO ruined the last 2 TNG movies as they railroaded personal story choices in a take it or leave it manner so Berman could not refuse! You could probably recut Nemesis and make it much better it could like ST5 be partially redeemed with additional time/money.

Insurrection & ST 2009 however IMO......................

Guess I'll have to pop in the Nemesis CE bonus DVD and see what you're talking about, Paul. I don't know if I ever saw the deleted scenes....

Dan, put it this way some of them should have made the movie instead of the scenes we did get!! Its obvious when you watch them on the DVD.

Now I'm really intrigued! Thanks Paul, I'll have a look in the next day or so at those. Branching directors cut might be good then?

I dunno. Stuart Baird is a good editor. But I'm not sure even he could save the movie from his direction.

Frakes' commentary for First Contact is comedy gold, GOLD I tells ya! It's a damn shame that he didn't do another one for Insurrection.

He did, but Paramount chose to leave it off.

There's serious "agree to disagree" territory - I was really let down by Frakes' generally lame FC commentary. From my review:

"Given his dual perspective as both director and actor, we might expect Frakes to present a surfeit of valuable insights. Unfortunately, we would expect incorrectly. Much of the time, Frakes stays with extremely screen-specific remarks like “look at that!” He also might chime “you go!” at a character and makes wisecracks about different situations. At times, however, Frakes does touch upon useful topics. He tells us about his unusual relationship with Alfre Woodard, directorial issues connected to the jump to the big screen, the quirks of various actors, locations and sets, and challenges related to night shooting. Occasionally Frakes offers some interesting moments, but much of the time he just makes barely-relevant exclamations. A fair amount of dead air occurs as well, and this ends up as a disappointing track."

Which reminds me of this: The greatest send-up of Nemesis, ever.

Paul, I watched all of the deleted scenes last night. They were actually some good ones...I particularly liked the 'new first officer' and Data and Picard's conversation over wine.

I hear you. Shame Paramount did not employ a decent director. Baird is a top editor but apart from Executive Decision his other 2 directed films are poor as he does not appear to be an actors director. Paramount apparently gave him the job as a thank you for saving them with some emergency last minute editing on several movies (MI2 & Tomb Raider2 apparently). Frakes wanted the job but politics meant they would not give it to him. Nemesis is not very good but still only the 3rd worse ST movie. They should really recut it and integrate some of the deleted scenes into a new BD but I guess when Rick Berman saw how poor it was he decided it was not worth spending anymore money on to utilise the deleted material. Still think however the biggest problem with both 9 + 10 was that Stewart & Spiner had too much story control and both demanded (Spiner especially) certain scenes like the singing when Berman voiced his concerns they threatened to walk so Berman had no choice but gets most of the blame (unfairly I think, he did not have much passion left for ST by then but his 8 figure salary meant he was still under contract to see out his time) I think those 2 actors should have left the story to pros. There were several online articles about this in 2002 but now they have been mysteriously deleted!!

Re: New Star Trek TOS sets, TNG films and Star Trek 2009 rumoured dates

The Digital Bits has posted this morning in their "Rumor Mill" the tentative extras for "Star Trek". The extra that I have been long-anticipating for months is included among the deleted scenes: Brad William Henke's "Uncle Frank" role.

The Digital Bits Rumor Mill - Current Posts

Notably missing are the 12 TV spots, though. I hope they don't leave them off.

Thanks Chris-

Cool, I'm more excited about TOS S2 and S3.

The Star Trek film BD set sounds really nice, some of the deleted scenes I have actually read as I start to read the novel of the film. The argument that Sarak and Amanda has and Uncle Frank. The original Kobayashi Maru should be interesting.

Not the place for me to discuss this, but the more I think about this new vision of Star Trek., the less I like it. It's a fine film and I really did enjoy it and I saw it twice. But as I re-watch TOS, it sort of makes me mad that such a rich backstory that Kirk had is dumped in order to jump start him in the span of one movie from punk kid to Captain without any of the experiences he'd need to learn to be a good Captain. But oh well, this film is really for the young and not me.

The new movie was a fun ride but that was always my main gripe with it. I guess our generation would term it as a "cop out".

Re: New Star Trek TOS sets, TNG films and Star Trek 2009 rumoured dates

I was fine with the new film, but have to agree that Kirk's promotion from cadet to Starfleet Captain was a little extreme, even under the circumstances.

Reminded me of those funny promotions in the Star Wars films. Han Solo, wanna be a general?? Luke, wanna be a commander?? Lando, ex-con....wanna be a general?? No real experience necessary! LMAO

Nope.

Its a setup movie. It had two goals - make Trek cool again and let us get comfortable with new versions of the original characters. In both instances the new Trek movie accomplished those goals in stellar fashion.

Let us wait until we see how they handle a story with all the pieces in places.

Nothing wrong with fond memories of the past but it should not be at the expense of the future.

Nelson give this new iteration a chance to build up a new history for the Kirk. The old history was not jettisoned, it still exists unaltered and untarnished in the prime timeline.

Now that I know that it's unlikely to be a mega-box set with all 11 films, I think I'll pick up that 6 TOS film box set.

I don't think you'll be disappointed... I think it's worth every penny, and I've only watched TMP and TWOK so far. Let us know your impressions when you get a chance to look through it.

I hear you Lou! And I totally agree with your point of view. I am open enough to accept the new and see what they do next. There are just a few things in the film that irk me. (No typo for Kirk, I meant irk!)

In some ways General Chang and Kirk said it best in Star Trek 6. Change will be difficult for our generation. But like Kirk, I can accept it.

Lou, I know you are in love with this movie and I enjoyed it in the theater, but I still feel the character of Kirk was mutilated, thereby losing the respect I had for that character. Nelson stated it quite well in his post.
