Hi, My name is joe im new to this whole A/V thing and im looking for answers from anyone willing to help!..

I recently bought the Yamaha RX-V565 A/V reciever, i have speakers and all that.. connected to it i have my cable box, ps3, and my xbox elite, all via HDMI. My question, that i cant seem to get answered is .. I know this reciever is capable of transmitting all the HD soundtracks.. is there a single setting that will allow the reciever to figure out which to use? For exmple.. if i watch a blu ray thats Dobly TRUHD.. and then play a game thats just Dobly, or DTS.. do i have to switch back and forth? does this make sense? im not sure if im asking the right way... if any questions please ask.. thank you !

Re: New To A/V.... Help With 7.1 ch surround....

The receiver "decodes" the soundtracks. Your sources are the ones that transmit them. The receiver will automatically decode/play (in the case of the PS3, the PS3 decodes HD soundtracks to multi-LPCM) whatever your sources send. You select between Dolby/DTS etc. by using the menu on your DVD/BD, or the "audio" button on the DVD/BD.

By default the receiver will just do straight decoding unless you select one of the surround modes "movie, music etc." buttons that do additional processing. Can hit the "straight" button to reset to plain normal decoding. That's what I'd use for most everything, though I'd make sure "Dolby pro logic II" was on using the "sur. decode" button for DD 2.0 sources.

You don't have to switch anything on the receiver when you switch between a movie & a game. It auto-detects what codec the source is sending.

so basically just set it up so it says "straight" on the screen of my reciever and the reciever will do the resy and distribute the sound where it belongs?
