One of my co-worker's kids has his last day of school today. We were talking about some of the things we did on the last day of school (we both went to different Catholic grade schools) and I wondered if other schools still did these things. I also wanted to hear people's favorite memories of the last day of school.
Did your teachers make you all go through each of your textbooks with an eraser so you could erase out all the stray marks? Then there would be this tense inspection as the teacher went through each book. What were they going to do, keep you prisoner in the school all summer if the book didn't pass muster? Another memory was this smelly ammonia stuff the teacher would spray on each student's desk. They would give each student a paper towel and you were expected to clean your own desktop. Didn't they have janitors for that? Nowadays you would have parents suing because of child labor laws, or some kids would claim they had allergies.
Any other special memories? My personal favorite was that last bus ride home and the driver would crank up the radio and you'd hear something like "School's Out For Summer" by Alice Cooper.
