Culver City, CA (June 1, 2009) – The winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award®-nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Class will be released on Blu-ray High-Def and DVD on August 11, 2009 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The Class was directed by Laurent Cantet and stars François Bégaudeau who co-wrote the screenplay with Cantet based on his best-selling novel about his real-life experiences teaching high school. This Sony Pictures Classics film will be available for an SLP of $39.95 for Blu-ray and $28.96 for DVD. Special features on both versions will include audio commentary on select scenes and a “making of” featurette. Exclusive to the Blu-ray edition will be Actors’ Workshop/Rehearsal Sessions and Actors’ Self-Portraits.
The Class is a remarkable docu-drama which focuses on a multi-ethnic, inner city middle school in Paris and tackles universal themes such as race, truth, individual relations and social problems. Andrew Sarris, writing for the NY Observer, said The Class “ranks among the best classroom movies I have ever seen.”
Synopsis
The Class follows the year in the life of a French schoolteacher (François Bégaudeau) working at a high school in a tough neighborhood in Paris. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom. As amusing and inspiring as the teenage students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeopardize any teacher’s enthusiasm for the low-paying job, although François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods. Directed by Laurent Cantet, the film stars François Bégaudeau, on whose best-selling novel the film is based.
