HDMI

Please excuse a very basic question. I'm going to HDMI for the first time. Do the HDMI cables take the place of all of the other audi and viseo connections I've been using? Also, I have a sattelite box with HDMI connection, as well as my A/V receiver and blue ray player. What is the sequence od HDMI connections, what gets connected to what?

It depends on your receiver. Some are "pass thru" only meanning they pass thru video but not audio. A separate audio connection is needed in that case.

We need to know what receiver and display you have. But if your receiver does accept audio as well as video then the satellite and the dvd player get connected to the receiver's hdmi "in's" and the receiver's hdmi "out" gets connected to the displays hdmi "in".

If your receiver doesn't accept audio via hdmi then you need separate audio connections as well.

Just to clarify, *all* HDMI cables handle both video and audio, but some receivers will not process the audio from the HDMI cable. For those receivers you need to run a second audio connection, usually optical or digital coax.

Re: HDMI

To get the most useful responses you should post the make and model of all the components you propose to connect, not the just the receiver and TV. Not all satellite boxes have HDMI or both optical and coax digital outputs, which can further complicate connection options.

Re: HDMI

My A/V receiver is a Pioneer Elite, Model #VSX-81TXV
TV is Sony Bravia XBR, Model# KDL-40XBR9
Blue Ray Player is Samsung Model# BDP3600

Please let me know if this helps with the answers as to what connections I need or don't need with the new HDMI cables

Hi sorry if I sound like an amateur but i'm looking to buy a second hand av receiver and i'm not willing to pay for the newer models with HDMI. If I get a DVD, Blu Ray or PS3 player and connect it through HDMI cable to my TV, then connect a digital audio out from my TV to my AV receiver, will this be poor, good, or great audio quality? Any downfalls with this system?

Cheers

You would connect an hdmi cable from the dvd player to the tv for video and the digital cable would be hooked straight to the receiver for Dolby and DTS surround sound.

Going from the tv to the receiver, even with a digitl cable, will most likely send a stereo signal to the receiver instead of a 5.1 signal. That is why it's best to run the audio straight to the receiver and not thru the tv.

To listen to the tv's speakers use an additional analog (red/white cables) connection between the dvd player and tv.

You will only get stereo PCM.  No surround.  This is because the digital audio out on a TV is only for the internal tuner, every other source gets downmixed to 2.0 PCM.  To get surround from your players, you need an optical/coax from the player to the receiver, or the player needs 5/7.1 analog outs.  Note that the only way to get TrueHD or DTS-HD/MA lossless audio from the Blu-ray will be from HDMI to a receiver that can accept HDMI audio, or via the 5/7.1 analog outs.  HD audio is downmixed to DD or DTS (depending on the player) when sent via optical/coax.
