Paradigm dipolar placement

Hi,

I recently moved and am in the process of hooking up my surround system. I purchased a pair of Paradigm ADP590's and am not sure whether to place them high up on the wall or where exactly...

The wall they will be hanging on is 14' by 10' and the couch sits flush against that wall in the middle. I do not have the option of hanging them on a side wall as one side is a window and it is open on the other.

Is it better to hang them high, say 2' foot down and 2' in or 4' down and 2' in? Or some other combination...

The couch is essentially the main listening and viewing position but there are two other chairs in the room that someone could use potentially.

I don't want to start drilling holes in the wall until I am sure where I want to put the speakers.

Thanks very much for the help!!

Re: Paradigm dipolar placement

I had the same problem when I changed the layout of my room. First I tried just spacing them out and hanging them behind me but all I heard was one side of the speaker. Then I thought maybe I could put them on shelves and angle them a bit so they reflect off the wall behind me and in front of me and it worked really well. I went from having a 6.2 system to a 5.2 system and it sounds great. I mounted them 3 feet above my seating position. ( I sat down and my wife measured from my ears...three feet up.) I got the shelves at Lowes I believe.

Re: Paradigm dipolar placement

Douglas,

Thanks for the photos. Three feet above your ears... Is there any science to that or did it just work? How far are you from the side walls?

I like the idea of shelves but the Paradigm speakers are designed to be flush mounted on the wall so I thought I would go that way but I get the idea of being able to angle them so that you can effectively manage the reflections off the walls.

ONe thing I did notice about your set up that I like, is the speaker wire housing that you are using. Where did you get that? Lowes too or Home Depot or someplace like that?

Thanks,

Kip

Re: Paradigm dipolar placement

Actually in the manual it states,(page 3-16) "For convenience, they can also be placed on shelves or high furniture, (i.e. bookshelves) as long as there is 18in. of free space on either side of the speaker." Reference Models:Studio ADP-590 (PDF at bottom of page)
You can also place them evenly in a corner so both speakers are reflecting off walls.
The 3 feet rule comes from Dolby Labs. They recommend 2-3 feet above you in a seated position for surrounds.
The wire housing came from: Wire Cover, wire channel, cable tunnel, surface raceways

Believe me I was torn about not just hanging them behind me and I did just that for awhile but they just didn't sound right because I was always just hearing the one side of the speaker. The speakers are above my head but the sound appears behind and all around me...like it's supposed to.

Re: Paradigm dipolar placement

Douglas,

Apologies, I only meant to say that the speakers, given their design (i.e. they have purpose built slots on rear of speaker and come with wall hangers), are set up to hang on the wall and not that your set up was in anyway incorrect. They also come with feet for set up exactly as you have them.

Thaks for the link, that looks like a great store and I think I will be using them.

And thanks for the Heads up on Dolby!!!! I didn't even think to use them as a resource! AWESOME>
