Any auto mechanics out there ?

I'm considering buying a 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo for my daughters. It's a 3.1 litre V6 engine with 160,000 miles, in very good condition, but the cruise does not work. What is the best and worse case scenarios to fix it(price wise)? Thanks for any advice.

Are you going to do the work yourself? There should be some on-line Chevy parts places where you can look up the prices of the parts. A cruise-control system only has a handful of components.



With that age I'd guess it's a vacuum leak in or around the vacuum actuator (this is a round gizmo about 8" in diamter and 3" thick with a throttle cable coming out the middle). Replacing two vacuum hoses could do the trick if the diaphram is intact.

Thanks for answering. I don't think it's something that simple. A mechanic is selling it for his grandparents, and that's probably the first thing he'd check.

No, I'm not going to fix it myself. I'm wondering what the worst case scenario is, as far as price.

do you happen to have a Check Engine Light on? I know my 05 Subaru will disable the cruise control if certain CEL codes are on, and there is a flashing light that shows that the cruise control is not functional in such cases.
