HDMI 1.4 Standard Finalized

New hdmi cable standard comes out - The Inquirer

The new HDMI standard is an entirely new cable format, which includes extra wiring to provide for gigabit ethernet capability over HDMI also, allowing for tighter integration of components. Now that it's finalized / ratified, there are hopes for HDMI 1.4 components "soon"

Honestly, how useful is this really gonna be??? How many A/V components could really use the extra integration of LAN hardline??? And is this thing gonna be backward compatible w/ older versions of HDMI? Same connector?

I guess maybe we'll start seeing AVRs w/ built-in WiFi bridges or routers or something to make something like this useful at all...

I didn't see anything indicating that they are doing anything regarding closed captioning. I know that there were a lot of folks online, who, like us, are wholly dependent on closed captioning, but these folks were burying their heads in the sand regarding digital captions, perhaps even expecting HDMI to provide some follow-up to their complaints. Unless I've missed something, it is now even clearer that the standards group does not recognize the validity of their concerns, and will go forward with their original policy on closed captioning (that decoding is to take place at the tuner or play-back devices, not at the display).

My wife and, of course, are not affected by this, because we acknowledge the reality, and took steps to ensure our equipment (tuners and play-back devices) supported what they needed to support. I suspect, though, that a lot of folks were misled by vocal zealots, and are now surprised that reality isn't conforming itself to the unfounded expectations those zealots fostered. It is a shame that folks refused to hear the truth when it was offered to them, and instead continued to delude themselves and mislead others. :sad:

No. HDMI 1.4 is a new cable with more wires, per my understanding, and is not the same plug type.

From what I've read, it is the same type of plug and there really aren't more wires. The new 1.4 just replaces currently unused wires in a HDMI cable with a twisted pair wire structure to improve reliability of the data transfer. So the only reason you would need to use a 1.4 HDMI cable is if you actually want to take advantage of the HDMI Ethernet Channel. I'm guessing most won't, so we can just continue to use older HDMI cables even with newer devices.

Sucks that they're not doing anything about captioning- I'm not deaf but I enjoy checking them out to see how they're done, and always watch everything I have one time with them on. I still have an older TV but hopefully will finally upgrade by the end of the year- I've resigned myself to having the main DVD player hooked up with both HDMI and S-Video so I can switch to that when I want to see the captions.

Putting a standard caption decoder in a DVD player would solve this, but it would be even more helpful to have it built into an A/V receiver so it could decode and display them on everything hooked up to it such as a VCR- of course why would anyone who can hear and has a receiver care about closed captions?

The tuner or play-back device is indeed the correct place for closed caption decoding to take place, which is why HDMI doesn't see fit to make any changes in that regard. The reason why some people resist that idea is that they want someone else to solve their problem and have the solution magically applied to the equipment and cabling that they have today.
