Asking for Receiver advice on a budget

Hi-

I'm in the market for a nice receiver that I can fit into my budget. I'm looking for a quality receiver around the $500 range. I've browsed the forums here and looked online (Bestbuy.com) to see what they had and it seems like I may be missing out on some brands. For example, it appears that Best Buy doesn't carry Onkyo.

I'm looking for the best (which is subjective I realize ) or some assistance in finding what I'm wanting to end up with here. I'd say this receiver would probably be used 75% for movies, 15% for TV and 10% for music. I'd like some expansion availability, probably be using digital cable, hd pvr and dvd player with a gaming rig maybe in the future.

Just browsing my limited options on Best Buy's website, I was sold on the Yamaha RX-V665 but thought I'd ask some more experienced people their opinions on this matter.

Thanks for your attention,
JT

Others to look at are the Denon 789 and 1909 ( Fry's had the 789 for $399 a couple of weeks ago) the Pioneer 1019 and the Onkyo 607. You can usually save a few bucks buying on-line (check the brands website to make sure the dealer is Authorized) but sometimes you can get a good price in a store. Particularly Fry's, it seems. I like to use Pricegrabber.com to keep me updated on the latest prices.

Re: Asking for Receiver advice on a budget

Gene, thanks for the response. I took your advice in regards to browsing Fry's. I couldn't locate any Denon receivers on their page, however I did find the Onkyo 607. I also found it on the new Circuit City online for the same price. Another receiver that fits the price range is the Sony, but I've never been a fan of their receivers as something about their ergonomics didn't sit right with me.

So with that being said, I'm now choosing between the Onkyo 607 and the Yamaha V665. I'll have to make my purchase sight unseen so I was hoping to get some feedback on each of these particular receivers.

Thanks for your advice,
JT

Re: Asking for Receiver advice on a budget

The Onkyo TX-SR607 vs Yamaha RX-V665 is a Honda Accord vs Toyota Camary kind of comparison. Very similar in price and features and you can't go wrong with either.

I'd give the Onkyo a slight edge with the Audessey Multi-EQ and it probably has a slightly better, though likely negligible, video section.

You might need more airflow/ventilation in your setup with the Onkyo receivers because they run hot.

Many of Fry's best deals are in-store, but I guess that doesn't help you much. I guess I'd go with Onkyo as well but either is a fine choice.
