Article on iPHONE vs. BLACKBERRY (Guess which wins)

The article can be found HERE

There have been moments over the past two years that I was
tempted to switch back to Blackberry.

It took me about two years to finally admit to myself that I loved
my iPhone. I think the iPhone was released too soon, and it took two
years for it to be fully enhanced between the 3G upgrade and the
software revisions.

Now, I think the iPhone is the greatest phone ever invented. Come
July, with the release of software 3.0, I think people are going to be
even happier.

...then there is still the rumor that a new iPhone is around the corner.

Re: Article on iPHONE vs. BLACKBERRY (Guess which wins)

Hi Ron,

My AT&T plan just expired last month and I'm going month-to-month just waiting for the newest rev of the iPhone to come out, hopefully during/after WWDC in June.

I'm just hoping for a few things:
1. Video
2. Better camera (which I hear is coming in the way of 3.2MP)
3. MMS (which I hear may be part of 3.0)
4. More memory (64GB preferred, 32GB acceptable)

I've also come to the realization that I'll always need a separate iPod. My library would now fill 64GB, and so even if the next gen iPhone came with that I would have no space for apps, emails, photos, etc. So I'm now resigned to the fact that until the iPhone gets into the 128GB and higher capacity, I'll always have to have a separate iPod with my entire music library, but at least if the iPhone has 32GB or 64GB I'll be able to put a decent amount of my library on there and use it as my "primary" music device and only use the iPod for long road trips, home music server, and long flights/travel.

Re: Article on iPHONE vs. BLACKBERRY (Guess which wins)

I think the iPhone has done something else, unexpected: destroyed the Blackberry jealousy in the corporate setting. Previously, only the chosen few got the company blackberry and us schmoes were jealous of those with the superphone.

Now, I just look on those with company blackberries with pity at having to carry such an outdated device (and am jealous of those with their own personal iPhone )

The link seems to be still active for me.

Carlo, I don't use my iPhone as an iPod. I think the reason for this
is that I don't want to tax the battery life.

Additionally, you are correct about storage space being another
factor. I have dozens of apps (my phone is full) and I'd rather reserve
the room for them rather than fill it up with music.

I do think Apple is going to come out with a larger capacity phone
and it is my hope that you will buy one for yourself when that happens.

Re: Article on iPHONE vs. BLACKBERRY (Guess which wins)

Ron, I've been saving my Best Buy gift cards and reward zone coupons for the last few months. Couple that with the current subsidized pricing of the higher-end iPhone, which I don't think they'll stray too far from even with the new version, and I essentially will be paying somewhere between $50-$100 for it. I'm just waiting for the new version because nothing would tick me off more than buying something only to have it upgraded a couple of weeks/months later.

I usually don't play the waiting game for electronics, but when it comes to Apple products, I've learned that it's not wise to purchase before the WWDC announcements unless you absolutely need the device immediately (which I don't).

Carlo,

Very smart move.

I would think it is almost certain that a new iPhone is about to
be announced. Be prepared to stand on line like the rest of us.

Re: Article on iPHONE vs. BLACKBERRY (Guess which wins)

All,

According to the current rumors, the new iPhone will be released "on or around" July 17th and will include the following:

1. OLED display for "150%" better battery life.
2. Higher resolution camera (3.2 megapixels) with integrated video recording.
3. Enhanced GPS with "turn-by-turn" functionality
4. Double the memory storage (16 GB and 32 GB) for the same price of the current 8 GB and 16 GB models.
5. Faster processor (supposedly 1.5 times faster)
6. Full MMS functionality with the 3.0 firmware.
7. Ability to utilize an "enhanced speed version" of the AT&T 3G network.

While the new 3.0 firmware will also provide for 99 additional new features -- including the much-requested "cut-and-paste" between all applications -- and will be available for all previous iPhones, some functionality will be locked-out on older iPhones due to incompatible hardware. Specifically, the MMS functionality will require at least an iPhone 3G while the enhanced GPS "turn-by-turn" functionality will require the new iPhone.

Re: Article on iPHONE vs. BLACKBERRY (Guess which wins)

Those additions would be enough to get me to buy a new iPhone in July/August. Well the good news if that date holds is that I have more time than I thought to buy one, so with my purchasing habits at Best Buy, that may be enough time for me to accrue more rewards zone certificates to make this purchase nearly free!

Carlo,

By Monday evening of next week (June 8th) we should have all the details on the new iPhone (feature set and availability; as well as a name!) officially locked-down.

It's expected that the current iPhone 3Gs will go on sale next week at some really attractive up-front prices along with a $10/month reduction in the AT&T voice/data plans. At that point a 16 GB iPhone 3G may become too attractive for some people to resist. (And don't forget that based on trends from the last two summers, the "new" iPhone may be in short supply until September.) Everybody will be made aware of the fact that the iPhone 3Gs will get the 3.0 firmware on July 17th which will provide about 90% of the features of the new iPhone. (Of course, you won't get the OLED display, higher-resolution camera, enhanced GPS chip, faster processor, and the ability to use the higher speed 3G network; so it better be available at a *really attractive* price!)

WoW!

Integrated video recording is fantastic, but what I am really
wondering if video chat is something that the iPhone will ever
be capable of doing.

I haven't heard any "reliable" rumors on 1. The only thing that makes even a possibility is that the xmas 2009 Zune will be OLED. Still unlikely as the iPhone is coming NOW, not in 6 months. Plus, Microsoft will be selling the Zune at a loss (as they are now) and will sell very few of them -- so they can afford to stick economically unfeasible parts in it. Apple on the other hand expects to sell tons of iPhone and iPod Touches -- and they sell at a profit, so sticking too expensive parts in there is a no-no.

Everything else is pretty much a given, except for 5) I have heard 2x speed (John Gruber), plus double the RAM (from 128MB to 256MB).

Source?

Clearly the release is imminent -- Apple just upgraded iTunes to 8.2, stating explicitly it is for iPhone 3.0 compatibility. iPhone 3Gs are also in short supply, so the hardware is imminent as well. We will find out more on Monday.

Ted,

Here's a link on both the OLED display and the release date:

PC World article on iPhone OLED display

That report even mentions a built-in FM transmitter(!) for the new iPhone.

WoW again!

Apple is certainly making these phones upgrade worthy.

You take the coolest phone out there and make it even cooler.

Hi Joseph,

I looked at that article, and in fact this is their only source: Source Reveals Specs And Release Date of Next iPhone! | Apple iPhone Apps I have never heard of this blog and even though most of the info is likely true, I haven't a clue if their source is real or fake. I certainly wouldn't take it as the definite truth. Well, we'll find out Monday.
