Connection Question

Hello,
I'm hooking up my new Pioneer Elite SC-07 to my system. My other components, all Pioneer Elite except my VCR (used to watch home movies), are about 8 1/2 years old & don't have HDMI.

1. DVD player: do I need to hook-up both the digital audio & analog?
-Aren't all DVDs/CDs digital?
-It has jacks for all of the surround speakers that I had connected to the multichannel analog audio inputs on my old receiver?
• Don't remember why I had it connected that way.

2. My VCR (JVC HR-DVS1U -super vhs/mini dv dual deck): do I need to hook-up both the S-VHS & component cables?

3. Is there any benefit to running the DVD player &/or cable box through the receiver or would I get a cleaner picture if I ran them direct to the TV via separate inputs?

1). Both the dvd player and receiver have Digital to Analog converters in them. CD's and DVD's are digital but speakers are analog so the digital signal has to be converted to analog somewhere along the way. When you hook a cd/dvd player to the receiver with a digital (toslink or coax) the the receiver does the conversion. When hooked up with analog then the player does it. You don't really need both in most cases. Usually the receivers DAC's are as good or better then the players. Usually. I'd use digital in your case.

1a) Not sure exactly what you're asking but you only need to hook up the 6/8 channel analog outs on your Pioneer Elite dv-38 if you want to take advantage of it's dvd-audio capability. Otherwise, the digital connection is all you need. Even though the 38 is a very fine player I bet the DACs in the 07 are at least as good or better than the 38's.

2) No. Component is better so I'd use it over s-video.

3) The main benefit is you would only need to run one cable to your tv and the receiver becomes a switcher for your video components. I hook my stuff straight to the tv (my Harmony remote does everything anyway) but most run all video thru their receivers. Edit: Also, the 07 will convert all analog signals to 1080 and send them thru the HDMI output. But if you have a 1080 tv it will also do the same and even though one may do a better job than the other, usually the tv is pretty good at it.

Thanks Gene, answered all of my questions.

I knew that component was better than svhs & that digital audio was better than analog but I wasn't sure if they would carry the lesser signals too (svhs & analog) or if I needed the other wires connected for when I was playing the ol' vhs tapes.

The component video outs are labeled as "DV playback" so it would seem reasonably likely they only work for mini DV. In any case, this would seem to be a trivially easy thing to discover experimentally, just try it, why would you ask a forum about a rare piece of equipment when you can find the definitive answer out for yourself?

Steven's response caused me to look at that JVC a little closer and, even though the manual was un-clear to me, it's quite possible that the S-VHS side will transmit thru the component output but it seems to me most S-VHS players only have composite and s-video. Also DVD/VHS decks require a separate connection for each side. So, to be honest, I'm not sure if you need both or not. Sorry.

Hi Steven,
After my receiver died unexpectedly, I purchased a new one & while I enjoy my home theater, I don't enjoy its wiring. I've pulled out every manual I have & have scanned them all but it would take days, if not weeks to read each of them completely.

After doing my due diligence, I still couldn't find, nor remember the answer to the questions that I posted & figured that this IS the perfect place for them to be asked. It is the "basics" thread & they were valid questions.

If I were simply lazy, as you imply, I could have asked dozens of questions that I have already answered myself through reading manuals & these forums. To that end, I'm sure there are others who will benefit from the answers given.

Additionally, my components are in a cabinet & it's difficult to get to them, much of my time is already spoken for with the kids & their events, work & a wife, who while patient, isn't thrilled that I've had the room torn apart all weekend -add to that a couple of bum knees & dern it, I'm trying to wrap things up without "experimenting".

Sorry again if my level of ignorance has offended you.

I wasn't calling you lazy. I was suggesting that asking the forum about a piece of equipment that very few people would own (S-VHS/mini-DV combos are not at all ubiquitous) is an ineffective strategy for getting an accurate answer. OTOH, you are forced to hook up the component video for your video deck no matter what, you are forced to do whatever work your cabinet requires. At that time, are you seriously suggesting it is a horrible amount of trouble to put in a normal VHS/S-VHS tape in, and hit "play", and see if you get a picture?

You are asking us to guess, when it is simpler & more accurate for you to just try it.

To answer, which is getting silly at this point, putting the tape in & pushing play isn't hard. Finding, through the rats nest of a hundred wires, the proper jacks on both the unit & receiver & wrenching to get back there is difficult so I would rather not do it twice.

Do you do this all day? Find posts you don't think are proper & harass them?

It's irrelevant if few people own this deck or not, the question was about a whether a component cable carries the non-digital signal. There are many of us out there who are still using this format. Even if the question were specifically about an old piece of hardware, forums are the place to ask them. Maybe someone in the community has the same unit & has run into the same problem, if you don't, that's okay too.

By the way, what does OTOH stand for?

Lastly, I wasn't asking anyone to guess. I was hoping someone would know. This forum is a treasure trove of very well informed individuals.

I respectfully ask that you relax & stop bullying or I'll have to put you in a time out little mister. Now go outside & play for a while.

You're massively overreacting. I fail to understand why a suggestion is construed as bullying. The work you have to do to connect the wires is something that you are going to do no matter what the answer is. It's not like knowing the answer is going to save you from this work. While you're back there, it's rather simple to perform the test. If it is impossible to test while everything is half-way out, then it is rather simple to connect both the S-video and component while you are there just in case.

There are some questions where asking the community is an effective way to get the correct answers. There are other questions where you are in a much better position to determine the answer than we are. I was merely pointing this out. This is bullying?

Say you followed gene's original answer. You do all this work, *don't* connect the S-video cable. Then you try to play a tape then find out he is wrong. Then you have to pull everything out again to get the connections right. I try to help you out and save you this trouble by suggesting you test things out while it's easy to do so. And I get slammed as a bully when I'm just trying to help you?

Kevin, don't get too upset over the things people post on a forum like this. It's just not worth it. As far as I'm concerned you can ask whatever question you want. If someone wants to take a shot at answering it they should make sure he/she did what they could to get it right. I didn't take the time to download the manual to see if it's a question I could answer so I'm the one who should have been criticized. And I don't mind. Never said I was perfect .
