I don't recall the theatrical release, but was this very prevalent, Aaron? I don't recall much negative sentiment towards the Civil War (or WWII) among the anti-war crowd. As for the title, any frustration would have to stem from a too literal and narrow-minded evaluation of the title. That said, I recognize there is pretty vast gulf between anti-war and pacifism. I have trouble seeing anti-war folks mad about the Civil War

My personal investment in the ends come from a sense of hopefulness, not necessarily sadness.

Burying Shaw with his colored troops was intended to be an insult, to be shameful. Based on the events of the film, the actual emotional implication is quite the opposite. It is a strong truth, and the film handles it with visual dignity and grace. The "Glory" of the title is the choices the men make (regardless of color), and the glory of war (so to speak) is that it highlights what makes men both great and equal.

After the battle, but not in the movie, a messenger was sent to retrieve Shaw's body to return it to his family. He was told "we done buried him with is ni**ers!" When he received the news, Shaw's father said "Robert would have wanted it that way".

The idea of Black men fighting and dying for their cause like, well, *men* along with the White troops was the point of the film -- and what rubbed some people the wrong way (for pacifist, not racist, reasons).

I never heard anything about any backlash from anyone (least of all pacifists), except maybe people still upset that the Confederates lost the war.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Glory

I never heard any backlash either. Most people I know who saw the film were quite moved. I daresay the audience with which I saw the film were silent and sort of walked out of the theater in a daze. My wife does not particularly like it because she is uncomfortable with the extreme violence in the film, but even she thought it a great film the one time she watched it with me (on laserdisc). She will simply be in the next room when I watch the Blu-ray.

Well, it was a long time coming, but I finally watched this movie this morning.  I meant to watch this when this review went up, but so many things kept getting in the way so I apologize for my late report.

It may have taken awhile, but I still bought this blind, no rental for me, and I'm glad I did.  What an excellent movie!  I'm not ashamed to admit that the movie brought tears to my eyes a couple of times.  The score is definitely as excellent as you guys have made it out to be too.   After the movie ended I felt a little angry about where the world is today and how long it's taken for progress to get as far as it has and how far things still need to go as far as people viewing and treating each other as equals.

Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Andre Brauer were excellent as always, as was the rest of the major cast.  I was very pleased with the PQ of this blu-ray and the soundtrack sounded great.  The movie surely doesn't seem to be as old as it is, it holds up very well.  I'm glad I was lucky enough to watch this for the first time on this format, although I know I would have still enjoyed it on DVD.  :)

I wonder what other great movies I've missed out on all these years?

Excellent, George!

To respond on the other topic. . .there wasn't any huge public outcry, but there was a sense from some people that the film glorified war too much.  At the time, that was the most likely explanation for why it was not even nominated for the Best Picture or Best Director Oscars.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here.  I certainly didn't remember hearing about any of this when I saw it in the theaters, and I can't find a single mention of anyone, Hollywood or otherwise, saying there was a "sense" that it glorified war.  Indeed, many pointed out that the film was unusually gritty and realistic, rather than sanitized as expected.  And it won 3 Oscars (including Best Supporting Actor for Denzel and Best Cinemtography), more than Born on the Fourth of July, which was an actual anti-war movie.

I finally pulled my copy of Glory off my shelf tonight for a viewing after having had the blu sitting there for quite a long while.  It has been several years since I had watched my DVD.

Thoroughly enjoyed the HD presentation.  As so many others have already noted in this thread, the real hero of this film is James Horner's score which is served beautifully here.

While the score was enveloping throughout the film, I was actually a bit surprised that the battle scenes didn't punch my surrounds and sub a little more...but I am still tweaking a new receiver and think I have a long way to go before I am fully satisfied with the audio field.

What a treat to enjoy such a marvelous film in such a marvelous format.

I don't have this disc but just wanted to comment that I have yet to encounter a blu-ray disc that did not allow me to change audio tracks by pressing the audio button on my remote. I too like to turn on subtitles so that I can understand all the dialogue. I had come to believe it was a blu-ray standard to allow changing audio tracks on the fly. I know many DVDs don't allow this.
