Very sad news.

Indeed, from Classicflix:

Our original source regarding The African Queen was wrong and it is not on the schedule for this October. Our studio source also cannot confirm its impending release. Sorry for the hub bub.

Frankly, it seemed like too big of a title to dump into this collection. Not that Paramount is exactly famous for marketing their catalog, but this is probably the biggest back catalog item they have left. Presumably they could gin up some sort of marketing campaign on this title alone to extend sales.

I guess Paramount will direct their attention to some reissues of Audrey Hepburn films.

And why not? There hasn't been a good Audrey Hepburn re-re-re-re-re-release in about a month or so.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

I had a strange feeling that this would somehow fall through. It just didn't make sense that a release of this importance would suddenly just appear in a store without any hub-bub. This film is easily worthy of a major press-release.

I would suspect that it's still coming and not far behind (Maybe for the holiday season), but that someone simply leaked some information too early.

Gee, what a big surprise. I believe nothing I read on sites like Movies Unlimited, and yet people continue to just take what they say as gospel. You'll know The African Queen is coming when there's an actual press release from the studio that releases it - they're not going to be quiet about it.

Looks like I'll never see the end of The African Queen. As a kid when they showed it on the telly, I always had to go to bed for school. Then I drifted away from television in the mid-70's. Is it true Bogie's a cylon?

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

I don't know if this has anything to do with the delay, but a friend of mine who visits Paramount when he is in town told me that about 2 or 3 years ago, they were doing tests on THE AFRICAN QUEEN to get rid of those horrible matte halos in the process work. He saw a test and said it was quite impressive. I assume it was digital fixing rather than photo chemical. There are a lot of scenes with this problem and I would think it would cost a fortune to fix something native to the film, but I wonder if that could be a reason for the delay.

I got my copy. it's a region 2 and plays nicely on my Pioneer uploading all-region player I bought this year. Best purchase I made recently.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

The good news is that we know from Paramount themselves that they are working on the film and there still may be a release this year. The only problem this time is there was not an official news release. The October date may have only been a planned inside date and Paramount would like to be more along with the work before they confirm a release date.

Now why I am being so upbeat about this is beyond me, for I think Paramount has no regard for it classic films, unless it stars Miss Hepburn or has Grease in the title.

Guess what; Paramount is releasing an 80th Anniversary box set in the UK this September...of Audrey Hepburn movies...

Matte-line reduction was indeed one of the aims of the on-going restoration project (and it will be done digitally).

I don't want to incur the wrath of HTF, but wouldn't it make sense for Paramount to wait a year and a half or so and release it in 2011, it's 60th anniversary?

But The African Queen does star Miss Hepburn (the other one)!

Based on how studios seem to release things I would think the opposite. Release it now as a single disk base bones additions and then again in a year and a half as a two disk 60th anniversary edition with extras. Then follow it up the next year with a BR release. That way they can get some to double or even triple dip purchases. That's the studio approach I'm familiar with.

Paramount could release it and reissue it 3 times before then.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

Many of us have reported since last October that The African
Queen
was being prep'd for release. That news came from
our group that visited with the restorationists who were personally
working on the film.

The October date could be real and the studio asked it be removed,
or I would suspect that they are looking to place it in a release window
for its 60th Anniversary.

I can't see its release being too far along at this point.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

And what about "Wings" Ron? You (or maybe it was someone else) who went to the convention and asked questions, gave us the heads up on its release as well but still a no show and nothing to say what is going on? Now people are hinting about Criterion being in the loop but wasn't before? The two movies were being spoken of at the same time.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

Didn't Paramount also inherit the Quiet Man? Another title that needs a cleanup and re-release.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

I think THE QUIET MAN went back to licensee Lionsgate. Unless I missed something, the old Lionsgate contract with Paramount concerning the Republic library had lapsed a couple of years ago, but then Paramount turned right around and re-licensed the whole kaboodle back to Lionsgate, with the lone exception of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, which they wanted to release under the Paramount label.

This was, as you might recall, around the time when Paramount got a new person running their DVD division (I forget the name), someone who reportedly had/has little interest in their back catalog, other than a few hits, endlessly reissued. There were a couple of Republic-owned noir films that were tentatively scheduled for release by Paramount at the time, SECRET BEHIND THE DOOR and DARK MIRROR, that were subsequently cancelled, followed by the news that Paramount leased the Repubic catalog back to Lionsgate.

Very strange, though, that Paramount would let go of THE QUIET MAN, which has very nearly the same popular stature as IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

Eric,

Though I have general ideas, if I could accurately time and time again
figure out the manner in which studios decide to release some of their
titles and the reasons why they ultimately get delayed I would be a hero
to all of you.

All I can tell you is that both titles have been in the restoration process.

However, as far as the studios are concerned, timing is everything.
They may have their own ideas as to the most advantageous release
window. Perhaps in this economic climate they may feel that the titles
won't sell. Perhaps they are still working on the restorations. Some
of these restorations can take well over a year.

Don't know, Eric, but I can't imagine the studio not putting work
into these titles and then letting them sit on the shelves.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

moviesunlimited has updated their DVD Beat column - this is a new update... and they seem to be saying that African Queen will be coming out after all....no date given though...

Quote:
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN: It was the only movie Humphrey Bogart won an Oscar for. It’s never been on DVD on our shores because of rights and quality problems. But now, John Huston’s classic 1951 adventure The African Queen will finally dock here. The African Queen (Paramount Centennial Collection) offers Bogey as the hard-drinking captain of a small, rickety boat who takes prim British missionary Katharine Hepburn through the straits of World War I-era East Africa. The film is well-known for the charismatic love-hate relationship of the two characters, the beautiful production, leeches, and, now, the gorgeously restored, print that includes some great extras.

Re: African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

The Digital Bits is reporting in their Rumor Mill, that The African Queen is planned for 10/13.

Quote:
Here's some news we think is pretty exciting: We've confirmed with our sources that Paramount is - at long last - finally preparing The African Queen: Centennial Collection with a tentative street date of 10/13 (date subject to change). [Editor's Note: We had direct confirmation on the record from the studio earlier this year that they were working on the transfer, but this is the first word we've had of the final release.] We believe this is currently a DVD only release, but a Blu-ray could still be planned for later in the year or next year. Also coming are new Centennial Collection DVD editions of Chinatown and Sorry, Wrong Number. We're told at least Chinatown is planned for Blu-ray release in 2010. Meanwhile, though it hasn't yet been announced, we're told once again that It's a Wonderful Life is tentatively planned for release on Blu-ray in November (the title is already available on DVD).

Now with both Classic Fix and Digital Bits talking about this, along with some mussings from Movies Unlimited, I hope for a formal announcment soon.  I am looking forward to this release.

I wonder if Theodore Bikel is participating,  He is the only survivor?

I don't understand why Paramount is taking so long to issue this film in Region 1.

When I bought my Pioneer uploading all-region DVD player (a good thing to buy, by the way), I bought the currently available Carlton region 2 version and it looks good enough for me.
