THANK YOU SONY!!!

Thanks for being the industry's voice of reason!

With the steady decline of catalog releases from every major studio, it's reassuring to find that there are still those bearing the torch for classic films in this diminishing medium!

Imagine... all it takes is a bit of excavation of catalog films and package titles at reasonable cost and with a bit of care, no gimmicks necessary!

2009...

The Strange One (1957)

The Jack Lemmon Film Collection

Film Noir Classics: The Collector's Choice

The Film Noir Collection: Volume 1

The Film Noir Collection: Volume 2

The New Hollywood Box Set

Icons Of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection

The Sam Fuller Film Collection

Husbands (1970)

Icons Of Screwball Comedy, Vol. 1

Icons Of Screwball Comedy, Vol. 2

The William Castle Film Collection

A Study in Terror (1965)

The Three Stooges Collection(s) Vol. Five and Six

Martini Movies (catalog title series)

The Films Of Budd Boetticher: The Collector's Choice

The Films Of Michael Powell: The Collector's Choice

Could it simply be a case of a brilliant marketing maneuver... Now that the commercial flood of classic releases has washed up, Sony opens the flood gates anew?

Whatever the case, it seems like it's been years (since the early days of the Warners classic genre sets) since I've genuinely felt any sense of excitement and anticipation towards upcoming releases as I do looking over the above list, and not only are they collections of great packages but nearly all choice catalog picks within! I strongly urge everyone who shares any opinion on the viability of this medium as a vehicle to preserve and present cinema as it was once embraced, to support Sony's well deserved efforts and so long as they continue to deliver classic films on DVD, I will certainly do the same!

This could be the last gasp from the commercial studios for standard DVD sales in our current economy and state and as film enthusiasts, I hope that we'll all give as much as we expect in return to keep this thing going a little while longer!

Thank you Sony and please keep up the great work!!!

Re: THANK YOU SONY!!!

I'll second that. I think this will be the first year ever that Sony has been the studio I spent the most dollars on.

Re: THANK YOU SONY!!!

Count me in.
I have the Budd Boetticher and Michael Powell sets as well as Our Man in Havana, An Affair in Trinidad,Five and The Garment Jungle from the Martini movies series.

I also have already pre orders for the Jack Lemmon collection, the Icons of screwball sets (vols. 1 and 2), as well as the 2 volumes of Film Noir and the Rita Hayworth set.

Thank you Sony for such a great selection. I hope we can hear more exciting news in the not so distant future.

Re: THANK YOU SONY!!!

I have bought the Boetticher, Powell and Last Picture Show / Nickelodeon sets. I have the Film Noir sets adn the Sam Fuller set on my wishlist.

Is there really going to be THREE Noir sets? Or is the Collector's Choice set Volume 1? With Volume 2 following in November? 2 x 5 film Noir sets released on the same day in November is kind of hard to believe.

The only criticism I would make is the Boetticher set has too much edge enhancement that looks like big halos. Otherwise the quality of the transfers is very good.

Re: THANK YOU SONY!!!

Gotta give credit where credit is due here - it's highly likely that this flood of new titles would not have happened if Sony hadn't partnered with Scorsese's Film Foundation. It's the reason why we got the Boetticher and Michael Powell sets, and I'd bet good money that a number of these forthcoming titles will be released in large part because of the work of the FF on restoring them for release.

A good move on Sony's part, but they haven't done it on their own. In fact, I'm actually curious to see where the restoration of The Red Shoes lands when it hits R1 DVD - since it's also a Film Foundation project, will Criterion get to upgrade their previous disc, or will Sony release it in a possible Michael Powell Collection Volume 2?

Re: THANK YOU SONY!!!

Janus were involved in the restoration; highly likely it will end up with Criterion.

It would be nice to see Universal get more n the game too. Hopefully they'll continue their backlot series.

Hear! Hear! The Pre-Code set, and the reissue of Touch of Evil from late last year were two excellent releases, Lonely are the Brave in July is a great follow up. But what would be great would be for some Universal Film Noir sets, they have a lot of great stuff.

I'm assuming the Collector's Choice set would be a more deluxe packaging of both Vols. 1 & 2 together, but it's just a guess... Well, that or possibly a reassemblage of existing Noir titles like Gilda, etc?
