Kevin-

Hah, I just told my son that "Glee" is the "Fame" of this generation.  I love both shows, for different reasons.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I should rephrase did it "successfully" in the States?
If anything else it proves that as long as you've got witty writing, charming and engaging characters whom you like and feel for (not to mention can sing their asses off), you can have a successful show that features singing and dancing in this day and age.

It broke the Cop Rock curse.

Yeah but in Fame, the students were the elite of the elite, the stars of the school, admired by fellow students and faculty for the exceptional talents they were.

In Glee?  Ehhh, not so much.

I think of them more similar to the Sweathogs. More outcasts.

I got the DVD set last week and my wife and daughter hadn't watch any of it. We all set around the tube and watched the entire season without commercials. It was a lot of fun to "bust a move" with my 9 year old daughter. I have just added two more to the "must watch" list.

Now the only bummer is having to wait on Season 2.
I think the true bummer is the lack of this show on blu-ray.  I could even take the obvious money-grab that is releasing part of a season at a time, if only it was on BD.  I think it's a pretty sorry practice, and will now wait until season 1 volumes 1 *and* 2 are out on BD before purchasing.  Better yet, I would like both halves to appear as a proper season on BD.

Money grab? I guess every product for sale is a money grab, if that's how you look at it. Are you expecting them to release the full season before all the episodes have aired? Is someone forcing people to buy this set?

You know very well what I mean when I say money grab, and thinking this is the same as "every sale," in that its sole purpose is to make money is quite pedantic.

How many shows go on a small break over the Christmas holidays?  Pretty much every show that has a fall debut.  How many of those shows have a current DVD (and DVD-only, at that!) release of just those first episodes?  Where's the House season 6 volume 1?  The NCIS season 7 volume 1?  These shows are *more* popular than Glee (ratings-wise), and one of them is even a Fox show, and yet they will be released as full seasons sometime in the summer/fall.

Of course nobody is forcing people to buy this (why is this the default response lately when someone brings up a concern over selling practices?), but releasing half of a season when there is no good reason (unlike, say, the Sopranos) is not a practice I would encourage studios/networks to go with.

I thought the Glee DVD set was green-lit before the show got the last nine shows approved.  As I understood it, the set was already in the works, so if the show bombed, they could have released it as "Glee:  The Complete Series" and be done with it.  When it took off, they changed the packaging to reflect "Volume One".  I'm OK with this, if we get a complete series in the spring (in Blu, too), and any future DVD sets are full seasons.  I hated when they did the split seasons for Battlestar Galactica...not necessary at all (and THAT felt like a money grab to me!!).

I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the second half of the first season was only going to be released in a full season set, probably late summer/early fall, before the second season starts to air.  It kept me from buying the set that was released a few weeks back.

This is the first time I've heard this.

I'm so happy to hear the show has been renewed. This has become a huge favorite of mine; I love how the writing is, and the characters are very well fleshed out, I think.

There is no mention of a Season One, Part Two in that article.  Not sure exactly what that means...

Well, that article specifically states that there was a rumour that the volume 1 DVD would come with a voucher for a (discounted?) full season, and then goes on to say that there never was a voucher and never will be.  Thus, there is no volume 2 coming out, rather, there will be a full season 1 set available, and those who purchased volume I will be left with duplicate episodes (more than half).

But that's totally *not* a money-grab, is it, Chris?

Hopefully the studio releases a volume 2 for those folks that purchased volume 1, and also releases the entire season together on blu-ray.

Though I don't ascribe much credence to the HFPA's picks for the Golden Globes, they did see fit to give "Glee" a GG for Best TV show (comedy/musical).

"Glee" hits the UK:

And hits the UK charts:
"Don't Stop Believin'" rises 99-5 (with Journey's original at #6!)
"Take a Bow" debuts at #43
"Golddigger" debuts at #49
"Rehab" debuts at #62
"On My Own" debuts at #73
I'm curious to see where "Somebody to Love" goes over there...

GG's are glorified People's Choice Awards.

Still, Fox is probably printing "Winner, Golden Globes" stickers for the DVD set.

This is a promo for the next part of the season.

It looks like the Madonna episode is going to be pretty good.

THE BEATLES!   Holy Cow!  I had heard about them licensing Madonna, etc. but the moment they end that promo with them singing "Hello, Goodbye" and talking Magical Mystery Tour?  This kicked up quite a few nothes, and I was already ready for it to come back :)  That is a great promo!
It's MUCH cheaper to cover Beatles songs than it is to use the originals. The publishing rights are held by different owners than the recordings themselves. Following Michael Jackson's death, I'm thinking that policies changed at Sony/ATV. Sony/ATV, which owns the publishing rights to virtually every Lennon/McCartney credited song through 1971, has been licensing their songs like crazy lately.

Maybe so, but still, to hear "Hello, Goodbye" made me all sorts of happy :)
That song lost a lot of its power for me after the endless Target commercials, but Beatles + Glee definitely = a good thing.

Sorry, "Glee", but I have too many shows at 10 PM on Tuesdays to go along with your post-Idol (and by extension post-DWTS) time slot stunt tonight.
This may wind up being a minority opinion (since I appear to be one of the first to comment about it) but, I have to say I am more than a little disappointed in tonight's highly anticipated return of Glee. After several months away, this is the best they can come up with? Ten minutes into the episode we learn that Sue is back and she's out to destroy glee club...AGAIN...and our singing misfits have to place at regionals or it's bye-bye club...oh, and their main competitor is out to sabotage Glee's chances... Talk about deja vu all over again! It's like during the break, the Fox brain-trust discovered they have a successful franchise on their hands, and more importantly...a CASH COW, and gave strict orders to not change a thing! If that's the case, then they succeeded...in spades! It's like they even dumbed-down the music numbers by having Will tell us that tonight's program will feature songs with "hello" in the title, rather than let the plot naturally dictate song choice. I'm sure this may be more iTunes friendly for selling songs, but from a story-telling standpoint, it's pretty lame IMO.

The show had two or three nice moments that hearkened back to the spirit of the first half of the season, so I am willing give the showrunners the benefit of the doubt for now. But, if the main story arc this go-round turns out to be nothing more than a retread of the first half-season, I am not sure what will happen to Glee over the long haul. Is this sectionals/regionals storyline (with new iTunes-ready songs) the formula that Fox hopes to perpetuate season after season? I sincerely hope not...

I liked having Glee paired with American Idol, made for a nice night of music.

All in all I liked the return of Glee however I was severely disappointed in both Finn and Will, I mean what the hell?

Finn dumps Rachel for no good reason because two, quite frankly unattractive both inside and out, cheerleaders ask him out? Damn, Finn. But that's not the worst thing to happen, the worst is Will cheating on Emma with that other woman!?

I thought Will was supposed to be a nice stand-up guy who was really falling for Emma? He really let me down last night.

Now Sue can do no wrong, to say she steals every scene she's in is an understatement, she turns every line given to her by the writers into comedy gold. Loved her 'Vogue' music video and how she managed to sneak in her hatred for Will in there.

One last complaint, why not a single line of dialog for Quinn last night? She was just...there, in the background given not a thing to do. Sure I complain because I've got a mad crush on Dianna Agron but still lol.

Welcome back anyway, Glee.

I thought that Glee was excellent again.  I don't know what you guys expected.  You can't carry on a comedy show - and especially not a drama - keeping everything as hunky-dory as they left it at the end of the first half of the season.

The script, as usual, was razor sharp.  This week, the two dimwit cheerleaders beat Sue to all the best lines.  I thought nothing could beat, "There was a mouse in mine," and then:
"Did you know that dolphins are just gay sharks?"

:-D
