Glee - Page 6

The thing that makes the music from Glee so wonderful and enjoyable, atleast for me, is the cast that sings it. I never liked Carrie Underwoods song and I am certainly not a fan of Kanye. The performances and the singers are what have made me really enjoy these songs I would otherwise never listen to.

I LOVE the music on Glee. I think the cast really does a superb job.

I think it definitely gets people to embrace music outside their comfort zones, since having a single cast perform all of these different genres has a unifying effect. The song that really validated your point for me, Lucia, was "Take a Bow" at the end of the second episode. There is no doubt that Rihanna is a really talented singer, but her music has never clicked with me for whatever reason. Lea Michele's cover, however, moved me in a way few pop songs have. And it's terrific getting to hear brilliant Broadway singers like Kristin Chenoweth tackle genres like Country.

I read today said the Glee gang was slated to be in Macy's parade but NBC, the broadcaster, nixed it.

The thing that is ridiculous about it is that NBC was upset that ABC and CBS were asking perfomers on their networks to not book on Jay Leno.  I guess what's good for the goose is NOT good for the gander!

Good lord.  Macy's could use whatever ratings it can get.

Really good episode tonight--the musical numbers were great, the plot was advanced nicely (the norm for this show, actually), and there were some really fine acting performances from the cast.  I only wish "No Air" got the full-treatment.  Also, the lip-syncing was a lot better tonight (though still needed work during "No Air,"; the Quinn number was actually really good in that respect.
I couldn't believe Quinn got a solo, and she didn't disappoint in terms of performance and acting out her situation.

Loved "No Air", even with the vocal embellishments.

The battle between Shu and Sue was good ol' fashion conflict fun, the barbs were entertaining and sharp.

Terri, OTOH, is going to crush Will when the truth comes out.

I was really struck by the difference in quality between the polished, prerecorded songs and the interracial jam session for "Ride Wit Me", which I think they probably caught with boom mics. The latter is much closer to what I remember real practices sounding like. They went a little heavy on the autotune for the rest of the songs tonight.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the horrible hand held camera work.  I've noticed it in the past with this show but tonight's ep had some extremely bad work.  Some shots were so terrible it looked like the cameraman was readjusting his grip on the camera.  I'm really getting tired of this technique.  In certain cases, like tense scenes, a subtle lack of stability in the shot can be effective but to have your subject jerk around the screen during any type of scene is just bad photography.

Has it occurred to anyone else that practically all of the women on this show are crazy, deranged, and/or bitches?

Perhaps I just forgive the male characters because I can more easily identify with them...but I don't think so.

I must say that this show is like a great football team -- the music and comedy are like the offense and defense, and if one group has an off day, the other one picks up it's game to pull out a win (I suppose in this scenario the soap opera drama element is the special teams).

Case in point -- last nights episode was a disappointment on the musical front, as I disliked "Hate on Me" and "Keep Holding On" as songs and couldn't fully appreciate the numbers.  OTOH, "No Air" was flat, lacking the musical production treatment it screamed for (most of it was Finn and Rachel pretending to read the lyrics off their music sheets), and "Ride With Me" should have been more than a non-studio jam session.  And Quinn's voice is really thin and reedy -- "Keep Me Hanging On" was limp, and all the dancing cheerleaders in the world weren't going to make it any better.

But the comedy was GOLD!  It would be very easy to assume that as funny as Sue Sylvester is, she's only good in small doses.  And yet, here's a huge does of Sue, and it the funniest show of the season!  Belly laughs galore!  I wonder how much of what she says is in the script and how much Jane Lynch improvises.  Some of the stuff she comes up with is hilariously demented, and it never fails to elicit a belly laugh whenever she takes umbrage at a "sexist" remark that Schue makes.  The entire scene in Principal Figgins' office about the academic status of the Cheerios ("most of your cheerleaders are functionally illiterate!") had me rolling.  I do wish that scene of Schuester and Sylvester tearing into each other had gone on longer than it did.  I'm not sure which was funnier this week -- BBT's use of "Eye of the Tiger" or the Carmina Burana music cues for Sue.

“Santana, Wheels, Gay Kid, Asian, Other Asian, Aretha, and Shaft.”

It was incredibly distracting last night. At first I figured it was intentional, as I noticed it on a closeup of Sue so I thought it was supposed to be as uncomfortable as possible. But when it kept jittering in later shots it really bugged me.

I'm totally with Hanson--most of the music didn't really do it for me but the material was some of the best the show's had yet. I disagree on one thing though--"Ride with Me" was actually one of the best performances ever on the show yet IMO. I loved the off-the-cuff vibe and the fact that it wasn't lip-synched and overly orchestrated was a refreshing change. I really hope they do more songs like that--if not all of them.

My real complaint about the music--am I the only one kind of bored by the fact that 90% of the leads go to Rachel and Finn? They're good singers (well, Rachel for sure; they seem to use enough AutoTunes on Finn that I could play him and sound great) but a little variety would be great.

Rofl, Glee-Teacher man singing "bust a move" to the students would be so inappropriate in real life. I kept imagining how fast an actual teacher would be fired>sued>jailed.

Who knew Jayma Mays could bring it as well.

Nice to showcase the other Glee clubbers.

The overall storylines weren't intriguing, but a good look at the effects of slushee on one's self-esteem if one allows such throwage to define them.

Just to be clear that's only part of Season 1, which has been picked up for a full 22.

I never like it when they do this half season crap. They'll presumably make the second half available separately, but it will only be 9 episodes. Will they price it accordingly? Will there be a full Season 1 release later on? I probably wouldn't buy it anyways and it still makes me mad.

Since this is apparently DVD only it seems like a pretty sure bet they'll do the Bluray right and just put out a regular season next year.
Before the announcement, I couldn't see not buying it. But I don't do partial seasons. Time will tell if it's Fox striking while the iron is hot or just a money grab.
IIRC, the DVD was announced early on (like after the pilot last spring but before the fall season even began.) Since it was scheduled and there was a tentative release date (before season one will end) I read that Fox decided to go ahead with it. Obviously, the DVD was announced before Fox gave Glee a back nine commitment, but I think a split season release for a new TV series sets a really bad precedent. I already avoid buying vintage TV series in split season sets, if this becomes an acceptable practice with new shows, too, then I'll be buying even less TV on DVD in the future...
While I love the show I refuse to pay $80.00 per season which is what it will no doubt work out to.

Releasing volumes of seasons is the ultimate in greed IMO and the reason I don't own Family Guy.

All I really want are the songs anyway so i'll just get the soundtrack CD when it's released.

FWIW, the full season 1 will be released on DVD next year. I'm not sure exactly what the purpose of this set is but it comes with a voucher for the full season release and I'm guessing it'll have exclusive bonus features (which sucks).
I also see the Soundtrack Vol. 1 will be out on November 3rd and Vol. 2 on December 8th. I've held off on purchasing individual tracks (at $1.29 each!) for this reason.
I hear Coldplay and Bryan Adams are still hold outs for approval on some of their songs.
Sad.

Move on to the next artist. The show is bigger than any particular song or artist.

I'm feeling some "Hall & Oates" right about now.
