I don't think he can read - Red Tailed Hawk

On my way in to my nephews ball game tonight I casually looked over one shoulder and found myself less than 6 feet away from this red tailed hawk! Silently cursing I remembered I didn't have a memory card in the D300. So I stopped and quietly pulled out my pack of Sandisks and put one in, slowly. Once in I saw what I feared most, 14 remaining shots. I took a half dozen then started to pull out my pack again when I saw a woman quickly approaching yapping on her cell phone at the top of her lungs. Of course she scared it off, and the tail-feathers you see in the last two frames are the results.

If you look closely you can see feathers in his beak, either he had a songbird for dinner or was preening himself.

I thought the sign on the can ruined the shot, I might try photoshopping that out, but it also adds a bit of irony, don't you think?

I like the sign, Sam. It gives the shot some humor. Beautiful bird, too. I've seen them around our area on golf courses a few times, but never had my camera with me.

As an aside, I read the flickr comments and have no idea what they are referring to (all the deletes). But, I've never been on flickr.

Those comments are from DeleteMeUncensored. You submit a photo to be critiqued and they either trash it or save it. I got two saves before 10 deletes (which is actually pretty good!) so it goes in the delete pile. Those that make it to 10 saves are usually really really good. Because its an uncensored group tho the members like to really be mean sometimes, but this is a good thing because you know there is some truth behind the comments and you get used to having your 'babies' treated roughly =) "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" etc.

Thanks for the explanation, Sam. That makes some sense. I was feeling pretty bad for you, because those comments seemed harsh for your photo.

They berated me for not voting more than on the merits of the photo. Par for the course with cliques like that! =)

What is this supposed to mean? What else would you vote on except the merits of the photo? I read the comments. Sorry, but you're a better man than I am. I think several of them are actually mentally damaged. Legitimate criticism is one thing but I don't call saying something like "before you drop your turd in........" legitimate criticism. It is just plain ignorance from a guy using a "handle" with the knowledge that he is safe from having every tooth knocked out of his head. I know you're not a beginner, but it always pisses me off how many people involved in hobbies or work have the attitude that they are just naturally gifted and dropped out of their mother's womb with a camera, an R/C transmitter or full knowledge of a job and were never beginners or amateujrs. People like some of the people in that group are what cause other people to drop out of a hobby. When I was flying R/C Precision Aerobatics I met a few of the types posting some of those comments. We used to call them assholes because their cancerous attitudes had the effect of making any "sport flier" interested in precision aerobatics lose that interest and gain the opinion that "pattern fliers" as a group were all assholes.

Constructive criticism is made withe out being ignorant. When someone showed up at the field and asked for help or an opinion I'd tell them what I thought was wrong or could be improved. I never started the conversation with a statement like "before you drop your turd in front of me, maybe you had better learn how things operate around here". Frankly, if I or anyone else had done that, I or they would have deserved to be busted one in the face. If you showed up at a photo show with a portfolio looking for constructive criticism, do you think anyone would talk to you face to face like some of those guys posted? I doubt it, because now they are within 2 or 3 feet of being taught some manners.

Man, I'm sorry for the rant, but I can't handle people who forget that they had to start at the beginning and follow the exact same track to their vaunted level of perfection as the guy or gal who is offering up his/her efforts for criticism but who may be at a slighty less advanced level.

If they actually offered some constructive criticism, then it might be useful. But, that group is one weird bunch.

You sure post to a lot of groups, Sam. I'm still feeling my way around, though. I'm not really sure which groups to check out.

To be fair I didn't follow either the rules orteaditions of that group and I felt their wrath for it. Yes some are egotistical psychos but it's their home turf I tresses into, cest la vie. I enjoy many communities on the web and you learn to take the good withthe bad... HTF has it's own share of foibles, and dare I say it, "nutters". :)
