Home Theater Question

Hi I have a question. I have a Samsung home theater connected to a Samsung LCD TV with an HDMI cable. When playing a CD it will not work unless the TV is turned on. Seems like the TV isnt doing anything. Does any body know why? I called Samsung and they said that's how it's supposed to work. Thanks

Re: Home Theater Question

They are right, because you're playing the cd in a dvd player. When the dvd player is on, usually, the rv needs to be on. If you want to play a cd, without the tv, get yourself a standalone cd player.

Oh ok thanks that makes sense now!

Re: Home Theater Question

That *doesn't* make sense to me. It seems to me that the HDMI-CEC "Anynet" features of this combo were poorly designed, to auto-power on/off TV or receiver unnecessarily. I think if you disable this feature on your TV menu you should be able to avoid this.

Re: Home Theater Question

My friend's setup does the same thing. He has Samsung LCD and Sony BD player. When he wants to play a cd, the tv is on too. Not seen any settings on tv or player, to change this...........

I've also heard other people complain about this. So, it's not just Samsung's Anynet feature doing it.

Re: Home Theater Question

It *is* Anynet (Samsung's term for HDMI-CEC) related though. HDMI-CEC was designed to be a cross-brand protocol, it's on other TVs as well (who often also use their own pet name for the feature). Turning off the TV's default use of this protocol (definitely possible, you just didn't find the right menu on the TV) ought to stop it from turning on any time you play a disc, which is a "feature" for people playing DVDs who would normally want the TV on and set to that input.

For those of us with good universal remotes with macros/activities, these automation features are pretty worthless, and sometimes annoying when the TV turns off/on or switches inputs automatically when you didn't really want it to.
