I am really looking forward to these sets, especially since they are at a VERY affordable price.

Wow! Is it too early to make Sony "Studio of the Year"?

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

This is great news!! I'm especially excited about the Jean Arthur films. If You Could Only Cook is one of my faves of hers.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

I hope these sets sell very well, so that Sony continue to produce more and more of these collections. And considering the lack of new classic entries for August, I think they will be a success (they should be irrespectively of this, just for the titles selected)

And that Sony goodness just keeps on coming.

Wonderful, wonderful news! Classicflix just posted this too. I remember that the Rosalind Russell MY SISTER EILEEN was partnered with the letterboxed musical on the old laserdisc. A very nice surprise during the dry season.

For the Stooges fans among us, don't forget that MY SISTER EILEEN (1942) has the added bonus of a hilarious cameo by Moe, Larry & Curly.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

Sounds very awesome. Screwball comedy hasn't been very well released, apart from maybe Warner's Classic Comedies set from a few years ago (with Bringing Up Baby etc.).

Wow! I don't know what's gotten into Sony these days, but I hope they don't recover anytime soon.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

I wish their tv-on-dvd department would start churning out classic and short-lived old shows.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

I hope the sales encourage them to think about upcoming volumes. Columbia has many choices in this vaults. My choices would be:

- You belong to me (another Stanwyck/Fonda pairing - there are some people that don't like this one, but it's definitively not my case);
- It had to be you (Ginger Rogers is great in this role);
- They all kissed the Bride (Crawford stepping in a role originally designed for Carole Lombard, and she did a great job);
- The Impatitent Years (Last Jean Arthur film for Columbia).

And there are also more Jean Arthur, Loretta Young and Rosalind Russell wonderful vehicles to be considered.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

would love to see a Lucille Ball collection: HER HUSBAND'S AFFAIRS, MISS GRANT TAKES RICHMOND, THE FULLER BRUSH GIRL, and as a curiosity-bonus, THE MAGIC CARPET (Lucy meets Perry Mason!)

I am beyond thrilled. Theodora Goes Wild is right up there with the Awful Truth as one of my favorite Irene Dunne films . Thank you Sony.

It had to be you was a cute movie but Ginger was way too old at the time for the part she was playing.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

This is great news! Nice to see Sony/Columbia back in the game! Especially with so many other studios dropping out of it, like Fox. Hard to believe that last year Fox came near to being the best studio when it came to releasing classic films. That seems like a very long time ago.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

This is terrific news! If You Could Only Cook and Too Many Husbands happen to be two of my favorite Jean Arthur films. My Sister Eileen is fantastic! And with Theodora Goes Wild (my favorite Irene Dunne movie) in the next set, that's enough for me to buy it!

Keep up the awesome work Sony! I'm excited to see both Together Again and She Wouldn't Say Yes for the first time!

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

Too Many Husbands and My Sister Eileen were remade as musicals in the 1950's
Too Many Husbands became 3 for the Show and was Betty Grable's last musical.
My Sister Eileen kept its name in the remake. It might have been nice to have a set of both the original and the remake.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

Gary, I don't see any reason for the set you suggested, since the My Sister Eileen remake is already available in dvd. And for the Grable remake, that I want very much, it could be included in a musical set.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

If someone had of told me at the beginning of the year that I would be purchasing more Sony/Columbia Classics than Warner Classics, I would have laughed at them.

Well done to Sony. Can't wait for their releases. Thank you for opening up your vaults!

Well for $20 we'll get 4 movies on pressed discs and a couple of shorts thrown in. Beats the hell out of some other releases I could mention.

Re: Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

Unattractive, yes, but still worth the sheckels. As you mentioned Livius, this kind of release is a refreshing change from what we've been seeing (and not seeing) over the past few months...

They sure beat the covers of MGM's war and western releases.
