Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Presents
THE STRANGE ONE
The Controversial 1957 Classic
From Sam Spiegel, Producer of On the Waterfront
And Calder Willingham, Writer of The Graduate
Featuring Ben Gazzara’s Film Debut
On DVD for the First Time Ever on June 16th
Culver City, CA (May 18, 2009) – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The Strange One for the first time ever on DVD on June 16, 2009. This critically acclaimed 1957 classic stars Ben Gazzara (Anatomy of a Murder, Husbands, Thomas Crown Affair, The Spanish Prisoner) in his debut role, and George Peppard (Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Victors and television’s “The A Team”). Controversial because of several scenes suggesting homosexuality, these scenes were cut over the objections of the director prior to the film's original release. This DVD presents the fully-restored, uncensored version with special features that include an all-new interview with Ben Gazzara. The Strange One is the legendary actor's film debut, a rare opportunity to see the young actor in an early, gripping role.
Originally a workshop at the Actors Studio, The Strange One introduced a host of talented young actors to the screen. Ben Gazzara’s portrayal of Jocko de Paris, is both captivating and disturbing; de Paris uses his malevolent charm to manipulate the other cadets and officers at a Southern military academy for his own amusement. When the other cadets (including George Peppard and Pat Hingle) realize they are pawns in de Paris’s plan to oust a commanding officer, they decide to take matters into their own hands.
The Strange One was produced by Sam Spiegel (On the Waterfront, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia), directed by Jack Garfein, and written by Calder Willingham (The Graduate), based on his own play and novel “End as a Man.”
