Setting up AVR-140 speaker x-over levels

Hello,

I recently purchased an AVR-140, and am in the process of trying to set up the speaker x-over levels. I have found most of the numbers I need online, but am not sure how these relate to the options I have on the receiver.

The options on the receiver are 40hz through 200hz (x-over)

and the numbers I have found for my speakers:

Front L/R: Technics Sb-A27 (crossover freq 3khz, 6khz) - Does this mean 30hz-60hz?

Center Channel: JBL Voice Venue (crossover freq 3500hz) - ???

Surround L/R: Polk T15 (Freq response 60Hz - 24kHz) - ???

Can anyone help me with what I should set the receiver to?

Those two numbers are the speakers cross-over meanning the woofer receivers the frequencies lower than 3khz and the tweeter receives those over 6khz with the mid-range driver covering 3-6khz.

This being a two-way speaker, the mid-bass drivers go lower than 3.5khz and the tweeter going higher than 3.5khz.

This is the speakers listed frequency response.

I couldn't find much on the Technics (but they're fine looking speakers ) but it looks like they have 12" woofers so an 80hz cross-over would seem acceptable. As for the center and surrounds, I would recommend 100hz or higher. If the AVR-140 (which brand BTW) allows for different settings for different speaker groups then you can set the fronts a little lower than the center/rears. If you must set all speakers to the same setting then I suggest you use 100 or higher.

BTW, if you didn't know already, using three different speaker brands will compromise over-all sound quality, especially the fronts/center. I'm sure money is tight and you probably have to use what you have but I just thought I'd mention it. Hope all of this helps.

Thanks for the info!

Its a Harman Kardon AVR-140, haha forgot to add that.

Yeah, thats what was mentioned in my other thread. I am seriously looking into trying to get all uniform speakers, I just don't know what to get.

No. k means "1000". That's 3000hz, 6000 hz, what the internal crossovers in the speakers are designed to filter signal between the woofer/midrange and midrange/tweeter respectively.

It's the "frequency response" range you want, the internal crossover frequencies of the speaker itself are irrelevant, as what you are setting in the receiver is the crossover to filter between the main speaker's woofer and your sub.

Your center/rears are smaller models so you probably want the receiver crossover @ ~100hz for those. The mains are large so you can crossover lower for these, 60hz or 80hz. If you have no subwoofer, then you set the mains to "large" and no crossover setting applies.

In situations where a sub isn't used I still recommend setting the fronts to small and a x-over @ 40 or 60. You will lose the bass below that but I'd be worried those older Technics might not be able to handle the explosions and what not on todays dvd's. Better to be safe than sorry. That's why I recommended a sub first, even a cheap one.
