Do any Blu-Ray players also play SACD and/or DVD-Audio?

I'm using the Pioneer DV-563A DVD player because it was the only player in my price range that would play both SACD and DVD-Audio discs. Now I've finally made the move to a plasma HDTV, and would like to get a Blu-Ray player. But my receiver's only pre-amp in 6 channel analog inputs are being used by the Pioneer and if I'm not mistaken I'd need to use those same inputs for the lossless audio formats used by Blu-Ray. My receiver has HDMI 1.1 inputs if that helps.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player
It's supposed to be out soon. It's in testing now.........

If you let the player do the decoding, which I assume is your plan since a receiver with 1.1 HDMI isn't going to have the decoders for the newer hires formats, you should be able to use your HDMI input for the PCM stream from the player. That'll give you the lossless audio as long as your receiver can accept the multichannel PCM stream.

The Oppo player that Ed mention sounds very nice. They have started accepting pre-orders from those who signed up for early information on the player. The first batches are supposed to go out latter this month. After they take care of those on their info lists, they will open the sales up to the general public, but I imagine supply will be fairly limited. It is a $500 player.

I do want to use the player for the Blu-Ray sound processing because you correctly noted my receiver's lack of same. I was just concerned that I would not be able to pass through the lossless audio through the HDMI 1.1 inputs; I thought Blu-Ray wanted 1.3. If the HDMI works I'll be fine.

That OPPO player looks like a great deal, but I'd have to hold out for weeks/months to get one. A distinct possiblity, but I'll probably try some other player first.

I actually received my OPPO 83 yesterday . So far it's a very nice player. Only disappointment as yet is a fixed crossover @ 80hz. That's still better than the 100-120hz most players have but an adjustable crossover would have been nice. Very good remote (but not a Harmony ) and the packaging ws first rate. Haven't tried hi-rez yet but that's next.

Also, I believe Denon either already has or will have a universal BluRay player. But I'm sure it will be pretty expensive.

HDMI 1.3 is needed to pass the undecoded, raw bitstream format for decoding in the receiver. HDMI 1.1 will accept already decoded, Linear PCM (LPCM), which is what the decoder in the player will output to the receiver.

Re: Do any Blu-Ray players also play SACD and/or DVD-Audio?

The list of positive answers to this question:

Early PS3 models play SACD. The 20GB, 60GB and the early 80GB, not the more recent 80GB, all play SACD.

The Panasonic DMP-BD10A/K plays DVD-Audio.

The Oppo BDP-83 plays both.

The Denon DVD-A1UD plays both.

I can't think of any others.

Re: Do any Blu-Ray players also play SACD and/or DVD-Audio?

I have the Oppo BDP-83 for a few days (still breaking it in). I bought it for the main system. Right now I don't have HDMI in the main system and I'm using the 5.1 analog outs for the SACD, DVD-A and the new lossless audio formats for Blu-Ray. I have a Samsung 2500 in the bedroom system (had it in the main system briefly) hooked to an HDMI rec'r (Marantz 6300 and I also have an Oppo 980 in the bedroom system) and a PS3 (non-SACD 80G vesion) in the basement system hooked to an older rec'r via just toslink. I still have a Marantz DV9600 (SACD, DVD-A and DVD-V) in the main system and I also have a separate CD player (Bryston BCD-1). I've owned a bunch of universal machines (e.g. Pioneer Elite DV-47A) over the years.

I've watched pieces of a few DVDs and the video on the Oppo is outstanding. I watched "Taken" on Blu-Ray last night. I can tell you from what I've heard of the audio so far, I think the Oppo is worth it's price for just SACD, DVD-A and CD. I've only done brief comparisons (and I'm away for a week now) and I can tell you it certainly is not at all embarrassed by the Marantz DV9600 on SACD, CD or DVD-A. I just did some very brief comparisons and will do more when the Oppo is more broken it. I expect to have HDMI for audio in the main system early next year and if the Oppo is better on SACD than the DV-9600, I don't have a problem moving the DV9600 (which by the way is a great DVD-V player in its own right) to the basement and selling my Sony 2000ES CD/SACD changer (I have an outboard DAC in the basement for CD)

Re: Do any Blu-Ray players also play SACD and/or DVD-Audio?

I agree that the OPPO 83 is well worth the price and they really have a winner on their hands. Mine replaced a Yamaha S-2500, which was a very good universal player as well (but certainly no 9600 ) and it only took 3 days to sell it on Audiogon for $150, but the OPPO seems a bit better in every respect. Mine is hooked up to an old (but lovable) H/K 520 via 5.1's and the audio is first rate. Just finished listening to I Robot in HDAD .

But I have to say, my Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi mated to an Elite 59TXi via iLink is just a tad bit better to me. I listen at rather moderate volume levels and I think it's the 50hz cross-over setting that I can use with the 59TXi. One of these days I'll have to hook the OPPO up to the Pioneer. Not an accurate comparison, analog vs. iLink, but might be fun. I'd love to hear the OPPO in a proper HDMI setup.

DVD-A was not in the original feature set for the 83, but multiple sources, including beta testers and Oppo, have confirmed that the release model does have it. Oppo clearly indicates DVD-Audio support on the BDP-83 specification page.

I would be surprised if it is not available for general purchase by early July, perhaps sooner, although quantities may be limited.

I have the BDP-83 and it does play DVD-A but does not have Netflix streaming.

Re: Do any Blu-Ray players also play SACD and/or DVD-Audio?

I would be very leery of buying one on eBay right now, there's no telling what you'll wind up with. At best, the seller will be on the waiting list and he'll just re-ship to you. At a substantial mark-up, of course.

More likely is that you'll wind up with vaporware.
