Sony is set to release ICONS OF SCI-FI: TOHO COLLECTION on August 18, a DVD set which will feature the long-awaited releases of MOTHRA, THE H-MAN and BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE. And like Sony's fantastic "Hammer Films" horror movie collection, fans can go to Amazon.com and vote for the cover they want by clicking HERE

Let the debate begin!

I'm liking the first cover best, but none of them are that hot.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

Not to sound cynical, but is there really any question? Option 1 is clearly the best looking cover, and the current numbers reflect that, as it's commanding 80% of the vote. Sony has to already know that, right? Right?? Hmm, after looking at the Icons of Adventure cover again, maybe not. Vote, people! It is your right!!

God, I love Sony these days.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

Yes!!! Sony has become my favorite studio for catalog releases ------ Did I really say that?

Re: the cover art - I've got no major preference for any of the 3. They're all okay. None as good as the Hammer Horror artwork but worlds better than the Icons of Adventure artwork.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

Right now it is 73% in favor of cover #1, which is the best. IMO.

I like the idea of voting for covers, but these all kinda suck pretty bad.

Although I knew this was coming, I am so happy to see this boxset with a confirmed date.

Coulmbia, you are the new Warner!!!

Looks like a great set! We need to support the studios still pressing real DVD's. This is where my money will go.

This on my list to get, along with anything else Sony releases. They have my support.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

I'm not that interested in this set, but WOW! 1) Sony has gone nuts set to release a lot of great collections over the rest of the year, and 2) what a FANTASTIC way to respond to the dud cover art by providing a variety of designs and letting consumers vote! I voted for #1, because I don't like the dud borders on the other 2.

Option 1 by a mile. Really looking forward to getting H Man on DVD.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

This is great news! Will this be a 2-disc set like the Hammer collection from last year? If so, why didn't Sony include a 4th film? Aside from Mothra, I don't think these films clock in at much over 90 minutes, and "The Mysterians" would be a natural tie-in, IMO.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

The Mysterians has already been released on DVD. I believe these are the only Toho films Sony has the rights to.

There are a number of genre boards that have discussed this release in detail, but the upshot is that there is some expectation of commentaries and even possible alternate original Japanese versions being included in the set. Before we complain about there being "only" three features, we should probably see what the entire package looks like. For what it's worth, Sony was originally considering including "Return of Mothra 3" in this set, a truly painful 80's flick. If they are dumping this dog in exchange for features, I'm ecstatic!

So are we voting on which one sucks the least?

Lol, they aren't that bad but they aren't that good either, I like the first one, it's brighter and more vivid.

Just to clarify, I am most certainly not 'complaining.' If you re-read my post, I began by saying, "This is great news!" I asked if this release is a 2-disc set, and if so, it seems like there would be plenty of room for a 4th film. If they are filling up the extra space with additional features, the I agree with you, all the better. No harm, no foul.

Cheers,

From what I've been reading, this is still planned to be a 2-disc set. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed on the extras.

They could have taken this as an opportunity to re-release Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth in their proper AR and Japanese language. I still haven't bought or seen these films because of the crap DVD.

Same goes for the English-dub only DVD of Godzilla vs. Destroyah and Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla.

Still waiting........

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

Michael Schlesinger of Columbia mentioned this release on the Horror Boards on Yuku:

That's been established for some time now: both cuts of THE H-MAN and MOTHRA, plus BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. We have Classic Media to thank for this. They were the ones who raised the bar by providing both cuts on their releases.

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

That bar wasn't that high! Look at the thread "All things Godzilla" and they screwed up on more than one title..."Rodan" for one!

Re: Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection (08/18/09)

Since it will be a 2 disc set, I'm hoping that "Mothra" will have it's own disc, with the other 2 sharing the other disc. I'm looking forward to this release.
