Re: WHV Press Release: Watchmen: Director's Cut (DVD/Blu-ray)

Even though I know the uber-size movie with the Tales from the Black Freighter scenes incorporated will be coming in the fall, I think I will be in for the Blu-ray of this release. "More Rorschach and a scene of Hollis Mason’s death" sounds great to me. I missed having Mason's death scene in the theatrical version, and it was really glossed over.

I'll play wait-and-see on the super version. Considering how it tanked at the box office, that version may never see the light of day, but then they'll be giving away this one for ten bucks by then. I figure it's a win/win either way.

I don't think you have to worry about that. I'd be surprised if there isn't a longer version by the end of the year.

As for it tanking, it made $107 million but Warners was crazy enough to spend $150 million because they assumed that anything with a superhero was a license to print money. Unfortunately, Watchmen is R rated, runs over 2 and a half hours, a period piece, had zero recognizable characters or stars to a mainstream audience and is very grim so they never should have spent that much money on it.

Oh, I'm actually hoping that there is a longer version. I've just noticed that studios tend to give perceived box office failures rather short shrift in home video. For whatever reason, box office follows these films around for the rest of their life and home video decisions are made based on the numbers, even if the numbers are 30 years old.

But here's something I just remembered: Warner Bros. spent about the same amount of money on "Watchmen" that they spent on Oliver Stone's "Alexander"... and Stone's picture didn't even break $40 million in the States. Yet a Director's Cut was released on DVD, followed some time after by a "Final Cut" that was 3 1/2 hours long. If Warners will put in the effort for THAT movie, I'm positive that they'll do it for "Watchmen". I'd be very surprised indeed if there wasn't some kind of jumbo economy-size "Watchmen" -- that incorporates "The Black Freighter"! -- no later than next year....

Good point, though with Alexander there were more bankable larger named actors involved.
But I'm hoping for the trio of releases as well. For that reason alone I will be supporting the Director's cut. If that's all we ever get, so Be it.

Yes but the Director's Cut of "Alexander" was supported and allowed the Final Cut to be released. "Watchman" needs the support of all for the longer cut, it anyone wants to see a even longer cut arrive.
