Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

They are releasing press releases for September already? What happened to the promised Esther Williams Collection Volume 2 due out in the summer, per the last Warners chat?

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

And people thought that the archives would have a negative affect on Warner's committment to it's regular DVD releases...

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

Haven't most (if not all) of these already been released to DVD?

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

All.

Sony has become Warner and Warner has transmogrified into Paramount. Strange days...

or Universal in its squeeze-all-you-can-onto-one-disc phase.

I wonder what demographic these waves really serve?

Just proves that Warner has a huge amount of unsold stock.

Of Casa-bloody-blanca? In the world of positive spin, that's speculative straw-grasping of the highest order.

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

So July and August are going to bring absolutely no new classic releases from WHV? Or have I missed something?

Not necessarily of every title in those box sets. But I'd bet that 1-2 titles of a box are being used to help sell 2-3 titles that have extra stock that has yet to sell.

It's very possible, given the media push for the Archive. They could also announce a few titles.

Times they are a changin', no doubt about it.

Or to attract new customers with those cheap bundles in order to "create" the classic fan of tomorrow.

They wouldn't mind this, but I doubt it's reason #1.

Cute.

It just wasn't that long ago that I would get excited to find that Warner held the rights to a film I wanted. Now not so much. I still haven't been able to wrap my head around this shift. Just wait until we get the news that the Bowery Boys will be slated for the Archives.

Well, even though I have a large percentage of the movies in these waves, I have none of the movies in the Sci-Fi set...and with that price...that may change.

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

An old Doors song keeps popping into my head.

(hint: Apocalypse Now)

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

I do not think this indicates that WB will no release other catalog titles in July and August. This announcement is for the TCM series of previously released titles. It also lists the entire series starting in February. As I recall, this same announcement was posted sometime in November or December of last year.

In the past, didn't they usually make announcements about three months in advance? Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

yawn.

What are the chances that House of Wax and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde will be sourced from more recently remastered transfers?

yeah right...

I hope not. That WILL be expensive, though I'd rather have them issued on the Archives than not at all. But the way I see it, WB has really been putting themselves on a limb by promising us those 48 Bowery Boys movies on regular commercial DVD for a few years now. I hope they don't cop out on that.

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

I'll be shocked if those ever make it out on silver disc at this point. Just look at some of the titles they're shoveling into the "arcvihe". If the majority of titles can't sustain a retail release, I'd be very doubtful that they will ever make good on a BB set. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I don't have much faith in the decision making at this studio these days...

They won't!

Re: WHV Press Release: TCM Classic Films Collection Wave 3

I'm interested in the western classics bundle (McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Wild Bunch, Jeremiah Johnson & Train Robbers) Does anyone have an idea of the transfer quality? I think the Wild Bunch has been issued a couple times, with the second having an improved image. The others I'm not sure about.

Not really. These are double sided discs. One movie on each side like Warner's previous film favorites series. While I am sure the transfers are from existing sources, the discs themselves are being pressed for this release and not from existing stock. The existing stock from previous releases were mostly single sided discs
except Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde which had both the 1931 and 1941 versions of the film and Postman Always Rings Twice which had a Lana Turner documentary on one side and the movie on the other.
