So what do you guys think is the best cult movie, and why? If you have a movie in mind, but you're not sure if it can be considered a cult, put it down and why you think it should be.

Re: Cult Classic?

In my opinion, hands down it has to be The Rocky Horror Picture Show. For something that is so cult in its soul to have become the phenomenon (that it once was anyway) has to make it close to the top of the list.

I like Pink Flamingos and Eraserhead much more but Rocky Horror is what I'd say is the cult movie.

Re: Cult Classic?

The original 1939 version of The Women. A fantastic cast and one of the most quotable films ever.

Re: Cult Classic?

I agree that Rocky Horror is the cult classic but I would like to add Buckaroo Banzai to the list.

Re: Cult Classic?

Rocky Horror (definitely #1)
Harold and Maude
Xanadu (Ok, not the 'best'...)

I also think that an argument could be made for Star Wars. I know that it's way too successful to be considered a 'cult' movie in the traditional sense, but when you consider the devoted following that the film has, repeated viewings, quotable lines, etc.....it probably has the largest cult following ever, and also just happens to be one of the most successful films ever released.

Re: Cult Classic?

1. The Abominable Dr. Phibes
2. Dr. Phibes Rises Again
Can't be without either.
Thanks for asking.

Re: Cult Classic?

Rocky Horror will always be the #1 cult movie.

Phantom of the Paradise was another good one. Almost has that "Rocky" formula.

Re: Cult Classic?

I'd put Harold & Maude up there.

For obscure, there is an adamant following of Wim Wender's "Bis Ans Ende Der Welt" which now has a 6 hour version out there because of it.

And add Serenity, which still gets theater showings.

Seconded. I too would agree on The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I might add The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds and Reefer Madness.
