Sick and ducking tired of "media not available in your region"

Thread Starter
Surfing the internet used to be a joy... there were so many things you can do... up until a year or two ago.

I am now getting blocked whenever I want to go to CBS, NBC, ABC, Hulu, and other sites to view media. iTunes Canada STILL doesn't have regular tv shows available yet... this is getting ridiculous.

Why is my internet being restricted, and what can I do to prevent or subvert it? I want my internet back!!

Move to where the content is available. Content owners don't owe anything to Internet users.

The BBC restricts me from watching any Dr Who stuff on the BBC site. I dont lose any sleep over it. Their loss, and i will get to see it soon enough anyway.
Maybe someone has rights to whatever in your country. And, the sites you want to visit, interfere with those rights?

Come on people, this is not the spirited responses I expected to see!

Of course, I don't know enough specifics to help directly. But how going through a proxy server?

Are these sites blocked because of political content, or because they aren't available in French?

It has to do with contracts. The US networks own the right to their shows only within US borders. The studios that make the shows sell the rights to other networks internationall who do not put their content on Hulu. In Canada, for instance, Global has the exclusive rights to "24," "90210", "American Dad", "Bones", "Brothers & Sisters", "Dollhouse", "Family Guy", "Heroes", "House", "Lie to Me", "Life", "NCIS", "Numb3rs", "The Office", "Prison Break", and "The Simpsons". If you were allowed to watch episodes from those show on Hulu or the induvidual network sites, the US networks would be essentially stealing revenue from Global. The good news for you is that full episodes for a lot of those series are available at:
Videos – GlobalTV.com – Official Site of Global Television – Full Episodes, Clips and More

My laptop is still set up with UK regional settings, but my US-based computer has no problems with the US network sites or Hulu, so as long as the proxy server is based in the US that should work.

Re: Sick and ducking tired of "media not available in your region"

Not coming down on folks who do it, but using proxy servers or other tactics to bypass blackouts technically still violates the intention of the owners of the rights. This, in turn, degrades the value of these rights. That, in turn, means that content owners get less for selling the rights, which prompts them to either lower budgets for production or not use distribution channels that turn out to be inadequately protected. I wouldn't be surprised if someone, working for the company than provides Hulu software, is actively working on a way of applying better region protection.
