Feel the Chills with the 1970’s Cult Classic Thriller

THE DEEP

Starring Nick Nolte and Jaqueline Bisset

For the First Time on Blu-ray Disc™ July 7th

Culver City, CA (May 4, 2009) – Dive into suspense with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray Disc release of The Deep on July 7, 2009. Based on the best-selling book by Peter Benchly (Jaws), The Deep is a subterranean thriller that resurfaces in Blu-ray High-Def for the SLP of $28.95. The underwater adventure stars Nick Nolte (Lorenzo’s Oil) and Jacqueline Bisset (Forbidden) as a couple whose lives dramatically change after discovering a hidden treasure. Following the discovery, the characters embark on a deadly sea mission where they discover that the mysteries surrounding the buried treasure go much deeper than the ocean floor.

The high-definition remastering gives new vibrancy to the vivid coral reefs, exotic tropical fish and crystal Caribbean waters. Special features include deleted scenes and extended scenes designed to further extend the underwater adventure.

This lavish, suspense-filled film was made from Peter (Jaws) Benchley’s best-selling novel. Gail Berke (Jacqueline Bisset) and David Sanders (Nick Nolte) are on a romantic holiday in Bermuda when they come upon the sunken wreck of a WWII freighter. Near it, they find an ampule of morphine, one of tens of thousands still aboard the wrecked ship. Their discovery leads them to a Haitian drug dealer, Cloche (Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.[1]), and an old treasure hunter, Romer Treece (Robert Shaw). With Cloche in pursuit, Gail, David and Treece try to recover the sunken treasure.

I know I'm looking forward to Jaqueline Bisset diving in her shirt. Come on now, that's what Blu-Ray was made for, right?

Honestly...when I read this sentence in the press release, all I could think of was adding something about Ms. Bisset!

Of course, I was just an impressionable teenager when Miss Bissett performed her underwater swim heard 'round the cinematic world!

Can someone post the cover art?

That's exactly the sentence I was thinking of too. Methinks the sentence was well-crafted.

I can only imagine the discussion around the table as the released was drafted...

Re: SPHE Press Release: THE DEEP (Blu-ray)

I wonder how much will be included in the deleted and extended scenes. In the days of LD, there was to be a much-anticipated release of the almost 3-hour version that played on TV, but it was ultimately canceled. That would be a lot of extra footage to include separately.

(Having recently had this issue in a review thread, I wonder if this film qualifies as sufficiently "classic" to satisfy certain parties' definition of films deemed worthy of Blu-ray treatment. )

Re: SPHE Press Release: THE DEEP (Blu-ray)

Agreed Michael. Would have been nice to see that 3-hour restored version at long last -- guess I'll have to live with my almost 30 year old (gulp!!) VHS recording of it.

Re: SPHE Press Release: THE DEEP (Blu-ray)

I'm delighted that deleted and extended scenes are being included. Hopefully they are using an anamorphic source for these scenes and not an old 1-inch from the TV broadcast master...

Since you asked ( ) ...

Since I am a fan of JAWS and I enjoy '70s films in general, don't ask me how I've never managed to see this one yet! I actually have a still-sealed SD copy of THE DEEP which I bought not too long ago because it was on sale cheap at my supermarket. Figured I'd enjoy it, so I gave it a blind buy. Maybe I'll watch my DVD and if it's worth owning I'll spring for the Blu-ray.

Now I must say I AM excited about these types of films getting a Blu-ray release. The more the merrier! Still, I can objectively say there are probably more "worthy" titles though.

Hopefully you have the orig anamorphic pressing on DVD. The Deep was re-released by Sony on DVD in dreaded P&S and I believe that is unfortunately the version currently in print. I'm a big fan of this film, and can't wait to see the gorgeous 2.35:1 frame in HD.

Feel the chills!

Hahaha, that's an apt phrase if there ever was one!

I didn't know it was released in proper OAR on DVD. Unfortunately, mine is FoolScreen, but I only bought it as a reference to see the film and get an idea if I liked it. Granted, much of the enjoyment of a widescreen film can be compromised by Pan and Scam, but I figured I could still at least gauge if I liked the movie.

Re: SPHE Press Release: THE DEEP (Blu-ray)

All I can advise on this movie for the uninitiated is don't go in expecting Jaws. This is more of a pleasant diversion than the cultural touchstone that Jaws is.
