Speaker placement

So last week i just got the last piece of my home theatre, the 5.1 surround sound, i set it up, and i was very pleased! but i was slightly overwhelmed when i read all the set up tips, everything being certain angles, certain heights, and certain spots in the room. im looking to finish the installation this weekend, but i have a quick question first.
my room is an odd shape [see image below], and i would like you guys' input on where to place all the speakers for optimal performance.
help would be greatly appriciated :] thanks guys.

room size is apx. 9'x12-18'
papasan= round chair. haha

Re: Speaker placement

Two chairs, a couch and a bed - all places where one could watch a movie. Which is the primary location?

BTW, the "TV in the corner" set-up is usually a deterrent to "optimal performance."

Re: Speaker placement

Corner systems really are a bugger - tricky to get a symmetric setup for ideal imaging. If you're open to rearranging a bit, I would shift the TV to the middle of the left wall. Set up your front soundstage there. Place the sofa opposite the TV, leaving a few feet between its back and the bed. The surround speakers, then, could be placed on the walls to either side (or slightly behind) the sofa. The chair could be placed on either end of the sofa, and (IMO) I'd ditch the papasan. They sacrifice way too much space for a single seat. The subwoofer could be placed virtually anywhere you have room for it.

If this is too much of a change, and you need to leave the TV where it is, I would at least suggest trying to build the space at closer to a 45 degree angle, again, using the sofa as the primary seating opposite the TV. The front soundstage could be kept pretty symmetrical without too many problems, but you'll likely end up with one surround speaker farther away from the listening position than the other. You can compensate for this (somewhat) by adjusting the settings in your receiver.

Hope this helps.

the primary location changes quite a bit, i usually have a few mates over but the most often used spots are the right side of the couch, the papasan chair when its just me. the bed is never used and the chair on the far top is rarely ever used. 90% of the time its always gonna be couch or papasan.

i realized my room would be somewhat tricky for a home theatre because of the corner setup, but virtually the only possible way, as the top wall has a window and heat vent right in the middle of the room. the left wall has a door into a closet. and bottom wall often gets awful glare from the window and cramps the room too much.

i like that second option, i think the first would work the best, but the left wall actually has a door into a walk in closet in the centre of it. kinda a bummer, as you can read in my previous post i cannot rearrange much due to cramping the room or glare or placing things ontop of a heater. ill probably try out angling the entertainment centre a bit. see if it makes much of a change.

*btw this previous weekend i went out and got some wall shelves for the rear speakers. i kept the room layout same as in the picture and placed the rear about 2 or 3 feet on either side of the couch. it seems to be working well as of now, but i think i may try rearranging my room to see if i can get it any better.
thanks for the input mates!
