110% new to home audio

Hello everyone. I am new to home audio and found this forum and felt like it would be the place to drop anchor and learn from people with alot of knowledge. I already posted a thread about what projector to purchase for my new home. I am assuming that it will either be an epson cinema 700 or 720. I am still unsure of which one to go with but honestly was leaning more towards the 700. I am planning on putting the projector in my basement just for watching movies, sporting events, and throwing bday parties to make my 7 year old the coolest kid on the block to make up for all of the times that I will embarass him for the rest of his life. I am hoping to get about a 120" screen if a can get that out of that projector. I guess I am unsure about everything else I will need but I keep seeing a few repeated items: a receiver, amp, and speakers that I should buy seperately over the next year or so. Am I missing anything? I guess you all would need a budget so I will estimate it at $1800 for everything but speakers. I am not sure what to spend on them for a 5:1 set up. Have any of you heard of axiom audio? I just happened to come accross them. Are any of you familiar with Cadence home audio? Thanks in advance for any and every suggestion you all can offer

You'll need a receiver, speakers, DVD player, satellite or cable box, ceiling mount for projector(unless you're putting it on a shelf), video and audio cables.

Love the Axiom speakers. Definitely check their board for someone close buy to demo them for you. Also check out SVS for speakers, especially the subwoofers.

What is the budget for the speakers?

Re: 110% new to home audio

I am planning to spend a little over a $1000 I was considering the epic master 175 set Home Theater Packages - Epic Master - AxiomAudio but wasnt sure if i could save some money by breaking it up like someone else had mentioned in another thread. He said buy the front two speakers first that way, i could put alot of money into good speakers. Then he said save up for a few months and then get the rears and sound bar (is that the name for the center speaker) I also have access to mtx home audio speakers. I was thinking about one of their subs. I think i can get a 12 inch woofer for like $99. Or do you think I should stick with all axiom?

Checkout the Panasonic DMP-BD60K. I found it for under $300 (search google shopping).

Re: 110% new to home audio

thanks for the warning guys! so what do you think about the mtx sub? also, I have no clue how home audio amplifiers fit into the whole scheme. Can someone please explain to me how you add it into the whole loop of receiver and speakers? is it just like car audio, and pretty simple to hook up?

Re: 110% new to home audio

Not familiar with the sub, but for $99 I can guess . Expect to spend at least $400 for even the lowest entry level sub. I almost positive I will never buy a sub from anyone else than SVS. I highly recommend you check them out.

I agree with the recommendation to get the mains first. You should spend most of your money on the speakers since they will last for a long time. Get something you really like and keep them.

Check out the Axiom M22's and the VP100 center (not soundbar, that is different).

Bookshelf Speakers - M22 v2 - Axiom Audio
Center Channel Speakers : VP100 - Axiom Audio

Add an SVS PB12-NSD:

SVSound - Box Subwoofers

For about $1200 you have the beginning of a good system. Both companies will allow you 30 days to demo their products, so there is little risk (you pay return shipping).

Don't go overboard with your Blu-Ray and receiver, and you can get the QS4 surrounds (or QS8's) for a few hundred more.

For this setup, there should not be a need for an additional amp. Just get a decent receiver (Onkyo 606 or higher) adjust your speaker budget up if you can.
