Yikes.

This is the second Golden Girl in a year.
Estelle Getty was July 22nd 2008.

She'll always be Ackmena, cantina bartender in The Star Wars Holiday Special, to me.

God'll get you for that, Travis.

I had no idea she was ill to begin with. Luckily we have her years of brilliant TV work (and a handful of memorable film roles) by which to remember her. I was also fortunate enough to see her one-woman show during its pre-Broadway tour.

My wife still catches Golden Girls every morning.

Bummer. Bea Arthur was one of the great character actresses of our or any time.

I still laugh even today at Sophia and Dorothy's sparring. Classic TV writing and acting there. RIP Bea.

Definitely. Very sad to lose another comedy great.

Let's get more "Maude" DVD's out, Sony, so we can enjoy more of her great work!

Re: Bea Authur dead at age 86

Very sad news.....caught me completely off guard. I will always remember her as Maude which was one of the TV shows that I spent my childhood watching. So long Bea.

Re: Bea Authur dead at age 86

How very sad...I own the complete "Golden Girls" series on DVD and STILL will watch the reruns on Hallmark and WE. An incredibly rewatchable (and for the most part, timeless) TV show.

RIP Maude, Dorothy and Bea

Re: Bea Authur dead at age 86

I'm going to keep this short because I'm really very upset at the loss of Bea so soon after Estelle.

The Golden Girls Complete Series (if there is one) has to now be dedicated to both performers that we've lost.

Also, someone PLEASE correct the misspelling of her name on this post. It's very disrespectful and it would have been very easy to find the correct spelling since her name is all over the news right now.

"Ms. Arthur was married briefly to playwright Robert Alan Aurthur, from whom she acquired part of her stage name. "Bernice" became "Beatrice" because she always hated her given name, and she simplified the spelling of his last name."

"The name Arthur is a modified version of the name of her first husband, the screenwriter and producer Robert Alan Aurthur."

David,
I carefully checked the spelling in the source I was using last night.
I found it confusing and surprising, but no disrespect was intended.
Rather, I was trying to be accurate.
You might search both spellings yourself. They're out there.

There is no apostrophe in titles.

Again, I took the spelling from ABC News. They were wrong. Bea did once have a husband who spelled his name differently.

Re: Bea Authur dead at age 86

i was truly saddened upon hearing that Beatrice passed away. All four characters on the Golden Girls were unique, but her wit was one of the main reasons the show was such a huge success. RIP Bea
