I built myself a Tiki Hut

I'm just about finished. All that's left is a bit of staining, waterproofing and seeding between all the stones, and maybe a bit more decor.

Great job Ron! That's a really good enhancement to your yard.

Now you need some of these:

Do you ever listen to Martin Denny or other exotica?

I've got a yard that is just plain grass. Those pictures give me some ideas about how I could spice things up.

I kind of liked that tiki idol by the palm tree. I guess you thought it was overkill with the one on the hut? I hope you at least left that partially submerged one where it was in the fifth photo?

Re: I built myself a Tiki Hut

That's very fun. It wouldn't quite go without the palm trees here in NY...

Actually Greg, that Tiki by the plam broke when it was hit by a falling 2x4. So, it got moved, it's the partially submerged one now. Party City had the plastic mask of that for $5. I sprayed the inside with oil, filled it with mortar and made several concrete Tiki's. I then painted and clear coated them.

Re: I built myself a Tiki Hut

I was just reading about your method in your old thread. I see you ended up finding other faces for variety. I saw some at Garden Ridge the other day (and thought of your project), but I don't remember if they were different from the ones you have.

I'm sad that your tiki broke. If I'm not mistaken, that was your firstborn that you showed from the pre-paint stage in the other thread.

Re: I built myself a Tiki Hut

Hmmm...I don't see any diagonal bracing. Don't think that will pass earthquake codes in California these days.

When I was a child, I was inspired by Thor Heyerdahl to build a raft from scrap wood in my backyard. I called it the "Kon Leakey".

You are not mistaken, that was my firstborn. Sad, yes but he still has a home in the yard.

Actually, a non-livable structure, free standing, does not need to meet any city codes.

Re: I built myself a Tiki Hut

Why do I feel like this is a game of "Find the Tiki?"

AH, there it is, but I can't find it in the 4th and 6th picture (from the top)..

Anybody else?

P.S. great job Ron... when's the party? :-)

Looks great Ron !!

Re: I built myself a Tiki Hut

Looks great! You are very creative.

One suggestion: you could put a thatched roof of palm fronds (real or artificial) over the courrogated metal roof. That might cool things off and quiet things down if it rains. If you do an internet search for "tiki thatch" you'll find some sites that sell the stuff.

Here's a few updated pics as of today, and yes, the lantern's light up. I have them wired via my Malibu low-voltage system.

Are you now building a miner's camp with the box of dynamite and the pickaxe?

Bob:  Don't you know it never rains in Southern California...

Ron:  Awesome job.  Must've been a fun project.

That is kind of the direction it's going, sort of. I'm taking idea's from the Indiana Jone Ride and The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.

What I really want are some wood barrel's, no idea where I can find those though, at least inexpensively.

Where's the 5.1 setup and projection screen?

What? You mean this is not a revolution in home theater design?

That seemed kind of obvious to me, Ron.  Seems like you're taking some hints from the queue to the Jungle Cruise ride as well!    Not to mention the original Tiki Room itself, of course!

Original Tiki Room?  The one with all the animatronic birds?

I'm going the other way for my backyard, and turning it into a vinyard.  Looks like I'm in good shape for some prime cab grapes.

Ron,
Too bad you cant find the "Barker Bird" from the Adventureland enterance from Disneyland. (May he Rest In Peace). HAHA!

Do you have the 50th Anniversary box set with all the audio, music ride-thrus through the years? Its on there.

And you've got options if you can't find the real thing!

You guys are just too much, that was a great post Mike...HAHAHA! And yes, there are also hints from the Jungle Cruise, one of my most favorite rides.

I'm in the process of revamping the roof today. Pulled all the tin off and putting it on the way I should have the first time. Pics to come...
There's always this cheap animatronic bird for you.

I take it the corregations should go the other way:  down the slope of the roof.

I love the new boardwalk, particularly the staggered wedges used for the curved part.  That little detail must have taken some time.

I found 35-inch high planter barrels for $69 each at a place called, ironically, "Ron's Home and Hardware".  They deliver.

Nice find Bob, but they want $99 shipping ontop of the $69 barrel price. That's exactly what I'm looking for but not for nearly $200. I'll have to make some calls locally and see what I can find.

Here's some updated pics of the roof I redid today...

That would never work where I live but I really, really like it. Nice job and thanks for putting up the pics. It always motivates me to see the work of other people.

Cool hut Ron! Nothing I build ever comes out looking half that good. (Perhaps that's why I am not a carpenter...)

I'll post a pic tomorrow, but it's seriously nothing much,  I work with very basic tools.

Here's the shed. Bulit this over 10 years ago...it's roughly 6'x12' with a 7' ceiling. As for tools, a drop saw, circular saw and a few power drills about does it, everything is built with those. I do have a small table top, table saw I use once in a long while.
