Naked City - What Happened?

Image Entertainment released three sets from Seasons 2 on, plus some individual episodes some years back.

Now, not only have they stopped, but they discontinued what they have already released, which now command some pretty high prices at both the Marketplace and eBay.

My question: why did they stop and why the sudden (in my opinion) halt to what they had already released? And for that matter, any chance of a re-release or re-start for the collection?

While I can't say for certain, I strongly suspect that the rights that Image had to the series simply expired. Unlike "I Spy," "Naked City" is no longer listed in Image's online catalog, so it's unlikely that they could do a re-release of episodes that were already issued, unless the rights were renegotiated somehow. I'm not exactly sure where the rights lie as Sony's logo was shown prominently on the spine of the box sets, but I've also been led to believe that the producer of the show, Herbert B. Leonard (now deceased), had the majority rights to the show. Someone here will probably be able to provide more information about this, Matt.

Wonder if anyone else may be interested in giving the show another shot, given we never got anything from S1 and the older releases are rapidly getting out of price range for us mere mortals.

Then again, if the rights have reverted to Sony, the odds stink, unless someone like Shout! or Timeless can be pressed into service.

Re: Naked City - What Happened?

I bought all the episodes put out by image . I had never seen the show before. I became a fan from the first episode i watched. I was very disappointed that image didn't complete the show . Definitely a good show with great locations and very good acting . The episode with Tuesday Weld is a keeper. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone picks up it's option and puts out more episodes .

Has anyone put together a list of the 1-hour episodes they didn't release?

I thought the show was interesting, now that it's up to Sony I'm not getting my hopes high.

Re: Naked City - What Happened?

This is one of my top five tv series of all time and I would happily go for a season by season set (including the half hour episodes). Essential television!

I don't remember who posted the link to this site originally, but you can find the information here: template

Curse you, Sony, and your reluctance to actually do a show the justice it deserves!

Re: Naked City - What Happened?

The shameless opportunist in me (but also budget-minded homeowner who just spent $600 on dishwasher) took one look at the ebay prices for the Naked City box sets (up to $109 each!) and decided to post a listing for all three together for $150 on Half.com listed under Naked City Box set 1. Like new. Only viewed once. And will probably give you more pleasure than a dishwasher.
