Center Speaker choice

I just bought a pair of Infinity Primus P362's and need a center speaker to go with them. My choices are the Axiom VP100 Center Channel Speaker which I can pick up for $190 or the Infinity PC350 for around the same price. I recognize that I generally would be better off with the same brand center speaker, but I have heard many speak highly of the Axiom. Better choice here for the prices?

Re: Center Speaker choice

Bob,

I have an Axiom VP150 and I really like it. However, if I had Infinity L/R speakers, I would go with the Infinity center. Mixing speakers in the front is usually a bad idea.

Of course you could get the Axiom and try it. You have 30 days to return it (you pay shipping).

Re: Center Speaker choice

It doesn't matter how highly a speaker is regarded. The purpose for buying the same brand center, as the mains, is for timbre matching. The center really needs to be the same series of speaker, as well as brand.

When a sound pans from left side to right side, you don't want the sound to change when it reaches the center, and change back again, when it reaches the other side. It should be a seamless and constant sound, as it pans across, as sounds in real life don't suddenly change as it comes in front of you,and goes by. Ideally, all your speakers should be from same series, but not as critical if the rears are different from the fronts.

Re: Center Speaker choice

Well, It seems to be a consensus, so I went with the Infinity's across the front. Now I just have to fight my way through the 350 page (ok maybe its only 150 pages ) Onkyo 706 manual to try and get everything properly calibrated with my Altec surrounds, Acoustic Linear Backs, and Velodyne sub. Thinking I might need to go back to college for a tech class

The Audyssey auto calibration feature works very well, and is simple to do. I have the Onkyo 805, and have a 7.1 setup, and the Audyssey did a very good job on mine.

Re: Center Speaker choice

I think that will go fine, just finished all my wiring this weekend, so we'll see this week. My bigger concern is the fact that my PS3, and Verizon FIOS box are HDMI but my Toshiba 50" is not. I got my CD, DVD, PS3, Cassete, and Fios all hooked to the Onkyo, but from Onkyo to TV is component cable and that only gave me sound, no picture. I had to patch FIOS and PS3 directly to TV as well as to Onkyo to get picture and sound, and I feel like that can't be the best setup.

Something is connected wrong, because component video cable doesn't carry sound, only video. If you have your components connected to the Onkyo for both picture and sound via HDMI, then you cannot use the Onkyo as a video switch to a TV that doesn't have an HDMI input. The receiver will not covert from digital HDMI to analog (component, s-video or composite) video. But, if you connect everything to the Onkyo via component for video and coax/optical digital for sound, you can use the receiver's component output to send HD video to the TV.

Joe

Re: Center Speaker choice

If the tv has a DVI input, you can use an HDMI to DVI cable, and should work. That must be an old tv...........

Re: Center Speaker choice

I am hooked from Onkyo to TV via components (picture)and RCA's (sound). I was wondering if I could put HDMI into Onkyo, yet put component out to TV, guess thats my answer. So then do you think I'd be better off stepping everything down going into my Onkyo (use components instead of HDMI) or would it make sense to HDMI into Onkyo and simply continue to also run component cables from PS3 and FIOS directly to my TV to get my picture? Will I lose or gain any quality or features going one method over the other?

Re: Center Speaker choice

You won't get any upscaling to 1080p over component. That's mostly done over HDMI. But, if it doesn't have HDMI inputs, chances are, the tv doesn't do 1080p anyway. Probably 720p/1080i, which isn't bad...........

I'm not familiar with the ps3, but you may still be able to run HDMI to receiver, for HD audio, and component to tv, for video. Maybe not though. It may not handle HDMI and component at the same time, from the same piece of equipment. See what the manual says.

You have a very nice receiver, and blu ray player. If you want to get the full advantages from them, you really need a new 1080p tv, with HDMI inputs.

Re: Center Speaker choice

I tried to tell my wife the same thing, but apparently the 5 new speakers, new onkyo, and new PS3, was all she could handle this year
I seem to be able to connect both the fios and the ps3 to both the onkyo and the tv, just not sure if that's my best approach, and/or if that is actually functioning properly.
