Cell Phone Static

Ever since my first cell phone, I noticed that they produce a little static on the car radio. Usually it was minor just before an incoming call. I am sure it has to do with the transmittance.

Recently I was given a Blackberry at work to use. It's static is obnoxious. My wife has a "sound machine" on her nightstand that plays sounds of the ocean all night and we have had it for over 15 years. With the Blackberry on my nightstand (a good 6 feet away) the sound machine picks up the static. It is loud enough to wake us up and does it a few times a hour. So I turn the phone off, but that defeats the reason why the company gave me the cell phone.

Anyone else have an issue like this? Is it just my Blackberry? I don't want to complain if it can't be corrected.

Re: Cell Phone Static

Hmmm. I've never noticed any interference like that with any of my cell phones.

Re: Cell Phone Static

It's the data antenna transmitting and receiving. This is normal and some radio equipment is more sensitive to it than others. My car stereo goes crazy when my Blackberry and Blackjack talk to the tower, but my wife's doesn't.

Re: Cell Phone Static

My car stereo and iPod dock at work both respond the exact same way to my Blackberry as well (and did to my old Sony Ericsson phone).

Just think of what it's doing to your brain!

Re: Cell Phone Static

My Motorola Razr V3 makes my computer speakers at home and at work buzz when I get a call or a message notification - usually a second or two before the ring starts. Sometimes the buzzing continues during the call, but most of the time it doesn't. Some of my earlier phones did the same. But none has ever interfered with any of my car radios.

It seems to be a common problem, although different phones seem to create problems with different RF equipment.

Joe

My wife is concerned about what it is doing to other parts of me - I wear my phone on my belt.

My razor also did it just a little before calls. It sounds like Blackberrys do it more than others.

Just wear the phone on your hip, Dave. You have two kidneys!

My friends Razr used to do the exact same thing. She always knew when her cell phone was about to ring.

Re: Cell Phone Static

My cell phone makes my laptop computer vibrate a few seconds before a call comes in. And a couple years ago, a different cell phone would ring a few seconds after an UNPLUGGED boombox-type stereo would vibrate. Had to be within a few feet of the phone for this to happen.

There's a couple weird things about this, and one of them is, why does it take a few seconds before the phone rings, considering that other devices go haywire and therefore must have received the signal a good two or three seconds earlier.

Re: Cell Phone Static

My cell phone makes noises on my ancient clock radio I use as an alarm. Sometimes I can hear my clock radio go off before my phone actually rings..

The other device is reacting to the handshake between the cell tower and the phone, which happens before the call is actually connected and the phone starts ringing. Basically the tower has to say, "Marco" and the cell phone has to reply "Polo" before the call is sent - otherwise the tower reports "phone not found" and the caller gets a recording saying that your phone is out of range or turned off. The reason a turned off device can react when the phone is very close is that the phone's "Polo" is generating enough energy to setup a slight current in the speaker drivers.

That's amazing. And a bit frightening!

Thanks.

Re: Cell Phone Static

So when what sounds like almost a Morse code coming from my clock radio from the signal bleeding into my speakers from my cell phone is the handshaking? Would make sense because I've actually heard my clock radio go off, then a second later, my phone would ring. Kind of a pre-warning that you're about to be called!

Re: Cell Phone Static

^^ Yes, that's definitely the tower trying to find your phone before sending the call to it.
