New to the HT world, really excited, but need some info

So I recently bought a Panasonic TC-P50S1, at to say the least, I'm pumped. I'm also impulse buyer, and to go with my TV I jumped on a HTIB (Panasonic SC-PT770) and to say the least I'm disappointed. I feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick in terms of quality and performance after doing some research.

First, I'm not even sure I have it connected properly to achieve Dolby digital, which is a shame since I'm using my PS3 as a blu-ray player. But thats all it's receiver is capable of. Now I'm not sure what codec's video games use, but even if its DD, I'd still want lossless for my blu-rays, or does the PS3 do all the converting itself? But back to the connection. The reciever supports one RCA aux in, one companent and one HDMI out ( for the 5 disc dvd player I guess). Now this is obviously lame since I have an Xbox 360, PS3 and HD DVR cable box all left going straight to the tv. So what I did was use went with the Audio out from the cable box, the RCA PS3 cables from the PS3, and split the audio cables from the Xbox 360's companents and put them all to a cheap radio shack switch then put that output on the switch to the aux on the reciever. But the problem is it doesnt sound like i have 5 channels of audio, It sounds like I only have 2 channels, left and right, and to boot the center channel doesnt play anything unless i change the surround setting to "manual", and when I put it on that setting it sounds funny, but like I said, when I put it on the multi channel setting it sounds like 2.1. Does anyone have any input on what I did wrong?

So here comes my second question, if I can get the HTIB I have now working correctly, I plan on upgrading it slowly ( or buying a sound bar from costco while I slowly buy a decent system, then returning it when im done, are soundbar's any decent?)

I was thinking of the Onkyo TX-SR507 reciever, or should I go with the 607?

PLease HELP! looking forward to any responses and help, thanks everyone!

Nope, did it this afternoon ...From what I gathered so far from research I'm most likely in the market for the Yamaha RX-V465 or the Onkyo 506/509. This is my first system and im really looking foward to the whole process. Are these decent entry level recievers? True HD is a pretty big one for me, why not get it out of the way now you know? HDMI Inputs are also big, Need at least three (PS3, Xbox 360, and HD DVR Reciever) Also I'm clueless on speakers... how am I looking so far?

Like David said, return the HTiB. Figure out what you want your system to do. Then purchase it.

Do you really need to put that in the post where we get our first impression of you?

Whats the difference? Does it make me a bad person? I'm not breaking any laws or even any store policies... If costco doesn't want people doing it they would change there return policy. I'm sure most people have done much shadier. Last month I donated 1k in my late fathers name to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital from a fundraiser I ran...does that leave a better first impression?

Chris,

We'll need to know your budget before we can recommend anything. It would also be good to know your room size and your goals (movies, music, etc).

Oops sorry. Well this is my first system so I'm looking at 1k-1500. I know, not much, but I only work part time as of last month (damn economy). And my room is funny. It used to be too rooms but the previous owners knocked down the wall in between the living room and dining room so i have two large pillars as quasi seperation. Woodfloors and if i were to guess it would be 40x12. but really 20x12 in my viewing area. My goals would be Movies/games. Is there anything im forgetting?

OK, first thing. Check out the Onkyo 576. This is an inexpensive AVR that will give you the HD codecs thru your PS3 (your PS3 will decode).

$300

That is a large room, (with the opening to the dining room), so you will need a decent subwoofer. Ceckout the SVS 5.1 package with the PB12-NSD. SVSound - Complete Systems

$1229

Add some speaker wire from Monoprice - about $25

This is just one idea. You can checkout other internet direct companies like Axiomaudio, HSU, and others.

Hey thanks a lot. I'm starting to get really excited ...But 1 more question, The way my viewing area is set up my coach is all the way up against the back wall, so theres no way to get the rear speakers behind me...and I read there supposed to be above and behind the sweet spot. What should I do?

Surrounds should be on the side of you. Put them a few feet above your head. Only back surrounds in a 7.1 (or 6.1) setup go behind you. You have to make adjustments based on your room.
