Don't forget to add the Rock Band Harrison Gretsch and Lennon Rickenbacker replicas at $100 apiece. That's $208 + $240 + $250 + $200 for a total of $900 for the complete 9/9/09 Beatles' Orgy Package!! 

The stereo box is priced about $10 higher than the combined cost of the 14 individual releases (at Amazon's prices). So you're paying $10 for a nice box and the bonus DVD. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see Amazon drop the price of this box before release day (like they did with the "Battlestar Galactica" Blu-ray uber-box). 

The mono box is a different story, as it is clearly aimed at hard-core collectors. I would expect this to appreciate in value after it sells out (and it will sell out).

Me, I'm in for both CD boxes but I think I'm going with the Rock Band game disc only ($60), as I already have the RB wireless guitar and drums. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

Well, the whammy bar on my Rock Band guitar died so I was thinking of replacing it with Paul's Höfner bass. But, apparently, you can only get that in the Limited bundle. Would be nice if the main boxed sets were SACD hybrids with multi-channel audio, but guess not. Apple really seems to be going for the throat on this one IMO

Also, only 10,000 mono sets seems like a very small amount.

I've pre-ordered the sets but I'm having a hard time justifying the $450.  I might drop the stereo and pick it up closer to christmas (it's not limited is it?).

To me, there's just no reason that both versions should not have been included in the boxed set, I would have even have been fine if the Mono versions were only available in the boxed set. But it's actually going to be more expensive for less material. Abbey Road and Let it Be are not even going to be included in the Mono set. It would have been nice to include them even if they were recorded in true stereo just so that you get a complete set regardless of which version you buy.

I remember reading that when Paul's "Wingspan" set came out that even thought it was a two CD set, he insisted it be sold at a single disc price.

Of course, in the case of The Beatles, Yoko is involved, who merchandised pretty much anything having to do with Lennon's legacy.

But of course, like an idiot, I put in my pre-order for the Mono set.

OK, so quick and dirty...if I want to stay true to the way these albums were recorded, I would pick up the mono box set and then get the remaining few discs in their stereo versions?

I pre-ordered both sets from Amazon. I'd been saving up Amazon gift certificates in anticipation of this ($80 worth) so that helps...a little, but I do hope they drop the prices again before 09/09.

I'm debating whether or not I should sell my old Beatles CDs now. I'm hesitating to do it because of the possibility of any "surprises" with the new CDs.

I would bet the cost of a Mono Box that only the numbered Mono Boxes will be limited to 10,000 copies, that they'll continue to produce the Mono sets, and that the non-numbered editions will see a significant price drop.

I'll be waiting for a non-numbered Mono Box, and won't pay more than $150 for it. If they did spend years remastering those albums in order to release only 10,000 numbered sets at an exorbitant price, then I don't guess I'll be owning a physical copy.

There is that argument. Many audiophiles and music fans believe that the mono versions are best, and present the music as originally intended. Little Steven, to name one such person, says all the time on his radio show (The Underground Garage) that the mono mixes are the preferred way to hear this music.

That said, keep in mind that many of the American releases of the Beatles album were in stereo, and the two volumes of American albums released on CD had both mono and stereo mixes included. Given that the albums are pretty short (30 or 35 minutes), it really is inexcusable that the new box set doesn't include mono mixes on the same disc as the stereo mixes.

So, the long answer is... It depends. If you were an American kid in 1964 and bought an album like Beatles '65 (released late '64), then your first experience with the Beatles was in stereo. An album like Meet The Beatles (also an American release) was issued in both mono and stereo.

I guess the true answer is it depends on your preference.

I've been waiting my whole life for these sets. Are they expensive. Yes. Do I wish they were cheaper? Yes. Am I going to let that stop me from buying them? No. The Beatles, along with Zeppelin, are the bands where pretty much they can charge what they want and this fan will be buying. Sad but true.

In the USA every album was released in both mono and stereo through "The White Album".  Only "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road" had no mono releases.  Also, all the singles through "Get Back" were released in mono on the 45s.  All these mono releases are different mixes than the stereo mixes.  Apparently "Yellow Submarine" was released as a mono "fold-down" from the stereo mix; that will not be included.

There was never a domestic US mono release of "The White Album".  I don't think the "Yellow Submarine" fold-down was released domestically either.  They both received mono releases in the UK, though.

I don't believe Sgt. Pepper's or MMT were ever issued in mono in the US either, at least not initially, although I could be wrong.

Oh, yes they were, and in Canada, too.  "The Ballad of Jok & Yohno"was the first stereo single, and the Beatles "Again/Hey Jude" compilation provided the stereo mixes for the recent singles, and a 2 previously unavailable acquired AHDN stereo tracks.

I own a mono Capitol Sgt. Pepper, so I can physically confirm that one exists.

I can't speak to where the mono versions of Pepper were released initially, but I own six or seven copies of the album, a couple of which are in mono. Some of these are imports and some are on the Capitol label.

That's why the mono box is so expensive, they know people will buy it (& it will probably sell out), but if you're going to get pleasure from it for the rest of your life, then it's cheap at the price.

The AAA discount is not stackable with the B&N Membership discount, but the AAA discount plus 15 percent coupon code off a single item is a substantial savings over Amazon's current price, even with B&N charging sales tax.  My final price before tax is $182.97 for the mono set and $187.19 for the stereo set.  Sales tax is $30.54.  Grand total: $400.70.  That saves me $38.75 over Amazon, the only difference being that the B&N shipping is 3 day and the Amazon shipping was 2 day.

I can't see it getting much better than this, but if it does, I will just cancel the current order and order from whomever has it cheapest.

Amazon.com has apparently burned thru their allocation of the mono box with pre-order sales.  You can still order it via Amazon.ca though.  Possibly just temporary until they get finalized allocation numbers from their supplier (though I'm just guessing.)

 Well it looks like I'm going to have to take off of work 9.9.09 to chase around these two box sets. I'm hoping Best Buy (I live near 3 of them) will have them so I can buy both and put it on my BB card for six months zero interest financing...will be buying the mono and stereo sets, but game-only for Rock Band, not the full instruments (already have 2 guitar, 2 mics and 2 drums from RB1 and RB2 sets as well as 3 cymbal pack).

unfortunately bn.com has now raised their price on the mono box by 10% (probably because amazon sold out) so it isn't as good of a deal for AAA members as it was.

B&N has the Japanese import versions of the box sets...same discs but several hundred dollars more in price.  I think I'll stick to the domestic versions.

I'm a fairly hardcore fan, actually.  But I'm on a budget. 

I'm even forgoing McCartney live in concert because it would have set me back $300.

I really appreciate the pointers to the best prices on the box sets...every dollar counts.

bn.com has lowered the standard price back down to 20% off MSRP on the mono box, so presumably you can get the AAA offer price of $183 plus tax again.
