Day-and-date purchases

How many of you here (besides me) have used a purchasing method that I refer to as "day-and-date" purchasing?

By that, I mean, when a new release of a television series comes out, you purchase it right on the very day that it is released. I did that with the #3 and #4 releases of "Hawaii Five-O," purchasing each one on its debut date.

Re: Day-and-date purchases

When I want something right away I normally do a pre-order for it. I seldomly buy in local shops. Sometimes I pre-order months in advance. Most of the time I have it on release date... sometimes I get it even earlier and sometimes I get it a day late.

As of right now I have a few TV Series on Pre-order...
- Jeff Foxworthy Show: Season 2
- The Best of Whose Line is it Anyway
- Monster Squad: The Complete Collection
- Life on Mars: The Complete Series
- Reba: Season 6

Re: Day-and-date purchases

I do it for the stuff I want the most. It does seem more exciting to get something on the first day it comes out.

Same here. I also like to do it for an older series because I want to 'help' the sales numbers so the studios know that there's an audience for the show out there. I understand why people wait for a Deep Discount sale, etc. but those early numbers are important so I don't want to wait around to buy it.

Considering your response, do you think that the failure to "day-and-date" (to purchase right on release day) is what led to the hiatuses/abandonments of certain series like "St. Elsewhere," "Hill Street Blues," and "Hart to Hart," in that the sales were not high enough for the first of "St. Elsewhere" and the second of the others (which, to me, would indicate lack of interest)?

Re: Day-and-date purchases

^ I don't think it's the reason in every case (some shows just won't sell well enough to get another release) but I'd imagine that there's been times that it could have made a difference between a show continuing to be released and not.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm not saying that if someone should let their child go hungry just so they can buy a DVD set but I think that if they have the money, they might want to pick up older shows as soon as they can to show the studios that there's interest in a title.

Re: Day-and-date purchases

As was the case with comic books in the '80s and '90s, I get new DVDs that I want faithfully on the day of release! Most often, at my local Best Buy. For instance, I'll be getting FREAKAZOID! Season Two promptly next Tuesday!

It's not an "every Tuesday event", as comics were once an "every Wednesday event", but I keep a document of release dates for DVDs I want - from information off of TVShowsonDVD.com and HTF.

There's a special feeling to that I'm sure some of you understand!

Re: Day-and-date purchases

A couple of years ago, I would follow the bargain thread and release lists and be at the store at noon to buy all the new titles I wanted. It got to be pretty expensive and I kind of lost interest in DVD sets, so I don't do it any more. When the last Stargate Atlantis box comes out, though, I'll buy it the day it hits the stores.

Re: Day-and-date purchases

I've done it for a couple recently

Room 222 - Season 1
The Adventures Of Robin Hood - Season 1 (not so recent)
Criminal Minds - Season 3 (R2)
Ghost Whisperer - Season 3 (R2)

Also pre-ordered two movies which I don't normally do

The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight

Re: Day-and-date purchases

Only if I can get said set for at least 50% off MSRP. Otherwise I wait. I have enough back catalog I've not viewed yet that I'm not too concerned about getting something on release date. BUT... let the 60's Batman or Green Hornet come out and I'll sing a different tune.
