Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

This would be the ideal lineup I'd like to see for this set, which would perfectly include films all featuring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Peter Lorre:

Disc 1: THE WALKING DEAD/FRANKENSTEIN 1970

Disc 2: ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY/GENIUS AT WORK

Disc 3: THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS/YOU'LL FIND OUT

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

Disc 1: The Walking Dead/The Beast With Five Fingers

Disc 2: Kongo/West of Zanzibar

Disc 3: Svengali/The Mad Genius

I'd rather they go with the better films (above) then the safe route with the bottom of the barrel Karloff/Lugosi films. But I know that ain't going to happen.

I hope what you suggest ain't gonna happen, Jim. Only meaning that I thoroughly enjoy FRANKENSTEIN 1970 a lot, and Bela's a load of fun in ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY too.

Let me side with Jim on this as I have no interest in Frankenstein 1970.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I really hope this thread doesn't backfire on me !

Hey Warner - if you're reading - Karloff and Frankenstein are still marketable names! I hope you'll continue with your stated plans of releasing FRANKENSTEIN 1970 in its proper 2.35:1 aspect ratio ... and there is, after all, already an audio commentary that's been completed with one of the actresses from the film!

But I'd like to think that the differences of opinion here prove that there is still a lot of desire for other movies here as well.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I'm always most interested in seeing 2.35:1 movies in their correct aspect ratio, especially those which haven't been shown that way since their original release.

So I want FRANKENSTEIN 1970 on the new set, more than any other movie named.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I am with Joe Karlosi on this one.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I haven't seen one of the movies mentioned above, therefore I don't mind that much but the set will be a must-buy for me nevertheless.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

Any set that releases a Lon Chaney classic, plus pre-code films like Kongo, The Mad Genius and Svengali would be a must buy for me. I always thought West of Zanzibar would show up in the long, long awaited Lon Chaney Vol.2 from Warners. The print on TCM is in really rough shape, but it does have the original Vitaphone score and powerhouse performances by Lionel Barrymore and Lon Chaney.

Btw, the company I am watching this Halloween is Universal. After their Pre-Code Hollywood set I am axiously waiting to see if they follow it up with a Pre-Code Horror/Mystery Collection. Think of it: Island of Lost Souls, Murder by the Clock, Murders in the Zoo, Murder Aboard, Mystery of the Blue Room, a mouth-watering set.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

Add SUPERNATURAL to a Universal pre-code Horror Collection...

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I'm ready to buy both sets. Now let WB and Universal put them out. That would be nice.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

Yes I'd also love to see some classic horror forthcoming from both Warner and Universal. I borrowed this list another forum to highlight the Paramount titles that Universal could still release - why limit it only to Pre-Code movies after all.

Island of Lost Souls (1932)
Supernatural (1933)
Murders in the Zoo (1933)
Cat and the Canary, The (1939)
Among the Living (1941)
Mad Doctor, The (1941)
Monster and the Girl, The (1941)
Uninvited, The (1944)
Man in Half Moon Street, The (1945)

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

Jim's list is certainly the one I'd "want" but I don't mind the badness of Joe's list. I know they're bad films but I enjoy GENIUS just for how stupid it is plus you got Atwill and Lugosi. Atwill's final film plus he's in drag.

FRANKENSTEIN 1970 I could do without but I'm sure it would probably be the biggest drawing point to a lot of cult fans.

KONGA/WEST would be a great one but I think I'd prefer KONGA in this set and WEST as part of a Chaney Collection.

It's too "small" for an official release but THE MYSTERIOUS DOCTOR is another good one to include.

FRANKENSTEIN 1970 and THE WALKING DEAD and ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY and YOU'LL FIND OUT make up our Karloff/Lugosi set for this Halloween at retail. All remastered and yes FRANKENSTEIN 1970 is 16x9.

I thought I read something about this from the Warner Chat last month and the above is what they said. At least we know this is coming. I would love to see BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS and others included as a Halloween promotion. Let us just hope for more.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I'd love to see a remaster of two-strip technicolor film "The Mystery of the Wax Musem." The old version bundled with "House of Wax," was fine, but after seeing the new transfer of "Doctor X," I'm convinced that they can do better. Maybe even combine it with the alternate black-and-white version.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I also hope we get Peter Lorre in the set along with Bela and Karloff - THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS should be included.

Dying to see THE MAD GENIUS too and I hope we will see a Chaney Vol. 2

Yes, Warner did say this during the recent chat. I was just starting this thread to suggest some other films in the set -- and also to remind WB that they have commentaries already completed for FRANKENSTEIN 1970 and THE WALKING DEAD.

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

I'm definitely going to pick up the set this Halloween, just sad that Beast With Five Fingers did not make the cut with this set. A Lorre boxset is a great idea as I am dying for the Lorre/Greenstreet films to make it onto DVD.

FYI:I am a fan of Frankenstein 1970, but that is because I have a soft place in my heart for bad 1950's sci-fi/horror films.

Same here.

I'm bracing myself to be at least partially disappointed with what Warner will offer however with the Universal's Backlot series I see a ray of hope for a possible pre-code (or general) Horror set. While I like to see all those titles you listed included, Island and Zoo in particular are essential to me as is The Uninvited and Cat and the Canary '39.

It's probably too much to hope for 2 Classic Horror sets (or one motherload set) from Universal this year. It'd be nice to get a pre-code Horror set and a Universal Horror Vol #2 which includes the titles from the late 30's through the 40's.

ALLIED ARTISTS 1950s SF AND HORROR FILMS!!!!!

This is yet another surprise announcement albeit a most welcomed one to be sure!

I am naturally for any DVD releases of the 1950s Allied Artists SF and Horror film catalogue but it seems that Warner Brothers Home Entertainment (at least for the present) is conservatively sticking to the titles previously issued on VHS (with the vast improvement of providing the original widescreen aspect ratio versions of course).

There are still outstanding films that have long been anxiously anticipated which still deserve serious consideration (despite their embarrassingly "catch penny" exploitational titles) like the Roger Corman SF trilogy ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS (1957), NOT OF THIS EARTH (1957) and WAR OF THE SATELLITES (1958).

However every new AA addition is certainly welcomed and most appreciated and I personally see nothing to complain about the titles selected for the two (?) upcoming Halloween season Karloff-Lugosi-Lorre themed doublebill DVD releases.

I concur that the video source elements for MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM (1933) were a (major) disappointment but this should really come as no unexpected surprise as it was the (secondary) bonus extra to HOUSE OF WAX (1953).

Re: Warner's next HALLOWEEN CLASSICS SET

For me, at least, there are pairs of films that just seem to belong together on a double bill. I know some of these have been released already, so that happening is doubtful, but....

SVENGALI -- THE MAD GENIUS
THE WALKING DEAD -- RETURN OF DR. X
DOCTOR X -- MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM
THE UNINVITED -- THE UNSEEN
THE CAT AND THE CANARY -- THE GHOST BREAKERS
HOUSE OF WAX -- PHANTOM OF RUE MORGUE
GENIUS AT WORK -- ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY

I think it is sitting next to the Bowery Boys set.
