Quick question, HD Audio and 2.1 channels

Can I still have HD audio using a 2.1 configuration? I am not that interested un surround effects (never have), but do like HD audio (like SACD in stereo)...

Are the downmixes from multi to stereo good? Would I be loosing anything besides the effects?

Does someone else have this configuration?

Can you be a little more specific about your configuration? Are you running HDMI to your display, then audio outs to your stereo?
