Using inside speakers outside

Thread Starter
I recently was given a set of BOSE 201 speakers as a gift. I wanted to put them in my pool house where they would technically be outside, but they would be under the roof protected from the direct sun and rain. My question is, besides the obvious concern if they would get wet from the rain, is there any other concern about having these "inside" speakers outside? I would put them inside during the winter to protect them, but wasn't sure about the heat or moisture (?) being an issue.
PS- I know I could get 'outside' speakers that would be water proof, but since these were given to me, I wanted to use them.

Re: Using inside speakers outside

Personally speaking, if I was going to be worried about the 201s' environment I would be worried about the moisture issue. Besides any wood the 201s might use, that could also affect the metal components all speakers include and in the case of the 201s, the cellulose i.e. the paper that the woofer and tweeter cones use. ---> Just guessing here but the paper might already include some kind of anti-mold/anti-warpage compound since many homes have higher than normal humidity so need some protection against that - I am basing this on the fact that I own several pairs of vintage speakers, all 30+ years old and their paper cones show no sign at all of warpage, mold etc.

BTW: the 201s, their big brother the 301s and the 901s are the only Bose speakers I feel comfortable recommending others to buy. I think they sound pretty good - a smooth/warm personality IMO - and don't cost too much for the performance they offer.

Re: Using inside speakers outside

Since the Bose 201's were given to you. You will have to decide if you have a different use for them other than your pool house and are willing to risk damage caused by an outside environment. If they don't stand up you can always replace them with an outside speaker.

I have to agree with Lance about the Bose 901's. I have a set of 1970's vintage Series II and they cannot be beat for stereo listening and can peel paint off the wall at high volumes with no distortion. The direct reflected sound when set up properly in a room make for a very pleasant and realistic sound stage. I always felt they were very natural sounding and only reproduced the music as it was recorded. However, in setting up a 5.1 HT it was difficult to match them with other speakers, so I keep them around to listen to music in Zone 2.
