Replace Subwoofer or all the speakers

This question concerns the speakers we use in our bedroom. They are some that I inherited from my mom about 5 years ago. They were a set of 5.1 Mirage brand speakers. The sub quit working about a year or two ago and I haven't replaced it. The remaining speakers are 500B's and the matching center. They are hooked up to a Harmon Kardon AVR146 receiver we got a couple of years ago.

So, first question: are the little mirage speakers worth keeping? Result being just getting a new sub.

2. if so, what sub would be recommended that would balance with them and preferably not break the bank.

3. If not, suggestions would be welcomed as to what would be recommended for the whole new speaker set up.

TIA,
Tony

Re: Replace Subwoofer or all the speakers

1. First do they work? Second, do you like the way they sound?

2. I don't know what size bank account you have. What is your budget? Don't say it is $xxx but I can go up to $yyy if the more expensive sub is better. Pick a budget and we will get you the best value.

Almost any sub, even the massive ones, can be properly integrated into a small system. Some receivers have an automatic calibration system. Minimum you should use a $30 SPL meter and a $10 calibration DVD.

3. Answer 1 & 2 first before looking at complete systems.

Re: Replace Subwoofer or all the speakers

They work and they sound ok (and again probably good enough for the bedroom system). So I'd be looking at up to about $300 if it was for the bedroom (perhaps just a touch more if just above that I could improve quality alot).

Another option would be to move the Klipsch reference RW 10 (I think that's what it was called) that we have in the living room with the Klipsch reference RSX speakers now and get something bigger for the living room.

Then we could talk about a $700 budget maybe.

Re: Replace Subwoofer or all the speakers

With either option, look at the internet direct sellers we recommend. SVS, Hsu, Elemental Designs, Epik Subwoofers and my favorite - build it yourself.
