Need a Blender

The blender I've got is just barely getting the job done. I have one very old cat and another that is ill and I have found that if I blend the wet cat food with an ounce of chicken broth and produce a pudding, they both love it and eat much better.

The one I've got just barely does the job (it's a waring) and sounds like it's objecting to the work. I noticed the Oster Pro (Beehive) at Sams was about $50. I think it's the same one at Amazon for considerably more: Amazon.com: Oster BPST02-B Professional Series Blender, Black: Home & Garden

Wouldn't you know it, one of the customer posted pictures on Amazon is of a critical part made of plastic. It broke of course.

Anyone have experience with this blender or have one they'd like to recommend. I'm not looking to spend the kind of money it takes to buy the one that blends cell phones.

Re: Need a Blender

The listed unit will blend. However, I'm concerned about your application. A meal for 2 cats is not a lot of food / material to blend at once. If you try to blend just one portion I'd think it would just spray the material all over the inside of the jar (and not really blend/mix the food). Most blenders work best with 10-12+ ounces of material.

What I do is take 2 5.5 oz cans of cat food with 1 oz of the broth and blend that. I keep it refrigerated. I don't blend a fresh batch for each meal. Actually, I'd like to blend 4 of the cans at once if I could.

There are a lot of high user ratings for the Oster, but it bothers me that one user found a critical part is plastic. It's interesting that you can buy a milkshake blade for it.

Re: Need a Blender

Even though you're not blending fish, have you considered the Super Bass-O-Matic 76?

Unfortunately I'm not looking to spend $400 on a blender. As for the bassomatic, I don't think that's being retailed anymore

Can that thing blend normal food?

Re: Need a Blender

I agree with Greg. For the specific application you have in mind, a blender would be overkill and, given the quantities involved, might not do as good a job. Unless you have other uses for a full-sized blender, you might want to go with a smaller chopper, like this one from Kitchenaid (I own this and a full-sized Kitchenaid blender. I use the chopper for making tuna salad. Tuna, rough cut celery and onions go in, followed by the mayonaise after a couple of pulses. Does a great job.) Other manufacturers. like Hamilton Beach, also make such choppers, which are like mini-food processors.

Re: Need a Blender

Whatever brand you decide on, skip anything from "Black and Decker". Every small appliance I've gotten from them has turned out to be junk. Very short life span and even with little use will fall apart.

It's worth the extra to get a Kitchenaid or some other higher end brand.

I used to do the same thing for a cat several years ago, actually had to feed him through a tube trying to get him healthy. However, I used a small mini food chopper, holds maybe two cups. Never tried a blender, just figured as others have mentioned that it would just spray all over the sides.

What? You don't like to blend canned food while it's still in the can?

Got it, no B&D. I think most are missing the point that the waring blender I have does do the job and it does not spray all over the sides. I put in 11 oz of canned cat food and one ounce of chicken broth to aid in the blending. It does not spary all over, in fact I don't even put the lid on.

My concern is that the blender is just getting the job done and labors some. I thought I'd look into a better blender. I wonder if one of those wand style blenders would be a good option?

I don't think we're missing the point, because what your current Waring is doing isn't the point. What the new blender you replace it with will do is. We're describing what we've seen in current blenders. You can't compare that to your Waring, which you are replacing precisely because it isn't working as well as it should. If you put two cans of cat food and some broth in my Kitchenaid and don't put the lid on and you're apt to have cat food pudding all over the counter. Put it on "high" and it will be all over the ceiling.

Regards,

Joe

Point taken. The reason I leave the lid off is because I do know my blender and know what it won't do. Certainly with a new blender, the first time I use it, the lid will be on.

I'm wondering if one of those hand-held, wand style mixers would be good for this?

Re: Need a Blender

A stick blender might work, but only if you use it in a tall glass that's roughly the same diameter as the blender. Otherwise you end up chasing 'chunks' around the bowl or whatever you try and mix it in.

A regular blender forms the whirlpool at the bottom so everything eventually falls into the blades and gets pulverized. If the cats can still eat little bits of solid food, the stick blenders may work ok, but you'll never get the smooth, pudding consistency you described.

My wife just told me the same thing. I think I'd better agree

Re: Need a Blender

Despite the warnings for Black & Decker products, my parents have used this food processor in a similar function (making tuna salad) for years without any problems. It wouldn't give you the increased capacity that a blender would, but for $20 it'd get the job done for your current amount.

Maybe this one will work better than your old one:

Re: Need a Blender

Mention of the food processor got me to thinking, we've got a Cuisinart, why not try it? One reason not to, is that I can't get it to work. It's been a few months since we used it and it was surprise when it wouldn't work. Dang.

Edit: Wife came home and got it work. Doh!

Re: Need a Blender

The appliance you own is always cheaper than any other one you buy....

I was looking on line for the cheapest spice blender when I discovered people really liked the Krups blade coffee grinder used to grind spices. Since I already had a Krups - packed away after I had bought my superior Cuisinart burr grinder - I merely had to go retrieve it, clean it, and start grinding spices. And with no additional outlay of funds.

"Cheap is the new black."
